Lets start our adventure by finding out what rainforests are, and why they are important!

There are 4 layers of the rainforest, click one of the layers to learn more! Emergent Layer Canopy Layer Understory Layer Forest Floor

- Highest level of the rainforest - Only the tallest trees reach this level, they can grow up to 200 feet tall - Since it is so high up, there is lots of sunlight for the trees - These trees do not grow closely together, they have lots of room to spread out

BirdsSmall Monkeys ButterfliesBats Some animals that live in this layer are…

Click on the animal that does NOT live in the emergent layer

Remember only small animals can live that high up!

You’re on your way to becoming a professional explorer!

- 2 nd level of the rainforest - These trees can grow from feet tall - The canopy layer acts like an umbrella it stops sunlight and rain from reaching the lower levels - This is the most diverse layerdiverse

Diverse: Lots of different kinds or forms of a thing

Some of the animals that live in the canopy layer are… LemursToucans SlothsParrots

Use the pen tool to draw a picture of one of the animals that lives in the canopy layer

You’re such a great artist!!

- 3 rd layer of the rainforest - This layer is dark and humid - There are lots of vines and vegetationvegetation at this level - There is not very much light at this level - Plants in this layer are usually under 12 feet tall

Vegetation: all the plants or plant life of a place

Some animals that live in this layer are… SnakesButterflies Frogs Insects

Keep looking!

- Bottom layer of the rainforest - This layer only gets 1-2% of the sunlight that the upper layer gets - There is very little plant life this far down - It is full of dead leaves and plants - The rainforest floor is very humid

Some animals that live in this layer are… Jaguars Okapi Bengal Tigers

Did you know…. The trees are so densely packed, rain can take 10 minutes to reach the ground An area of a rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed each second

Did you know…. More than 20% of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rainforest Rainforests only cover 6% of the earth’s surface but contain more than ½ of the world’s plant and animal species

Now that you’re a pro explorer, let’s see how well you were paying attention. Go to the home screen and click on the “Quiz” button to begin the quiz!

Click on the layer that is shown in the picture to the right.

You did a great job! Now it’s time to move on to the second part of the quiz.
