A WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH TO NUMERACY NUMERACY: THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND WORK WITH NUMBERS.

40% of pupils do not get GCSE grades A* to C in English and maths by age 16. Worse still, 90% of those who don’t reach this basic standard by 16, don’t achieve it by age 19. Nearly 80% of the adult population have numeracy levels below the equivalent of a GCSE ‘C’ grade.

WHAT IS NUMERACY? Being numerate means having the confidence and skill to use numbers and mathematical approaches in all aspects of life - at work, in practical everyday activities at home and beyond, as consumers, in managing our finances, as parents helping our children learn, as patients making sense of health information, as citizens understanding the world about us. Numeracy complements literacy and is sometimes called ‘mathematical literacy’. Both skills are needed in order to function fully in modern life.

OBJECTIVE FOR THIS YEAR Raise attainment Improve consistency Reduce Negative outlook on Maths/Numeracy Real life numeracy situations Lesson 5 dedicated Numeracy time. Resources.
