Comparison of Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar as President of Republic of Texas.

Annexation Lamar- He was not in favor, he wanted to further expand Texas Houston He was in favor of the idea of joining Texas with the United States during his term

Relations with Mexico Lamar He sent his Secretary of State Barnard Bee to Mexico City with an offer of $5 million if Mexico would recognize the Rio Grande as the border and recognize Texas Independence. Houston To avoid another war he sends Santa Anna to Washington D.C. to have him sell the idea of the U.S. taking control of Texas

Domestic Policy Lamar His policy required money, which the government had very little of . He wanted to build a public school system and a first class University in Texas. Congress even put land up for sale for these programs. He earned the name “Father of Texas Education” Houston He had 3 different domestic policies. 1. He wanted to gain control of the army 2. determined to keep peace in Texas 3.wanted to put the nation on solid financial ground.

Native American Policy Houston Houston had lived among Cherokees for several years. He understood the problems that faced them. He made treaties with Native Americans and set up trading posts on the frontier. Native Americans grew to distrust the Republic. Lamar Wanted to remove native Americans from the frontier. He thought they blocked westward expansion. They defeated the Cherokees, who had ties with Mexico. Comanche's lost in the Council House fight. Some thought they had no right to land

Armed Forces Houston came upon a problem. Lamar To make Texas safer, he built a new army out of scratch. He fired Houston’s soldiers. He recruited from the U.S. and offered free land. Bought one ship and had 6 more ordered to be built. This small fleet was called The Republic’s new navy Houston Houston came upon a problem. Houston’s army left and some were sent home. Houston wanted a small army so that he could keep cost down.
