COORDINATION ACROSS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING SYSTEMS: A CRITICAL LOOK AT THE ROLE OF INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION 2009 CCPRC Meeting, Washington, DC.

Purpose of the Session  Facilitated discussion  Focus on a critical look at the role of higher education in supporting state initiatives to enhance quality and build a high quality workforce.

Key Areas for Discussion 1. Developing a state infrastructure to support articulation across training and higher education programs (2 and 4 year colleges and universities). 2. Faculty resources to build knowledge, skills and abilities of faculty to address and support quality initiatives within a state (including supporting faculty in providing PD/relevant course work that addresses all children and families). 3. Supporting non-traditional students (including those with limited preparation for HE and LEP students) through distance technology and other non-traditional methods. 4. Assessing and evaluating competency through licensure/certification/credentialing.

Process for Session  Break into Discussion Groups  Facilitator Assigned to Each Group  Articulation – Dan Haggard, New Mexico State Child Care Administrator  Faculty resources – Pam Winton, CONNECT Project, UNC Chapel Hill  Non-traditional students – Stephany Ziegler Hewitt, MS, CCDVC, Dean, Community, Family and Child Studies, Trident Technical College, South Carolina  Assessing and evaluating competency – Kate Tarrant, National Center for Children and Families, Teachers College, Columbia University

Work in the Groups  Within each group, address the following (40 minutes):  What specific issues are states facing in this area?  Are there strategies that are working?  What are the major areas of need related to research and evaluation?  Capture Key Thoughts on Flip Chart Paper – May want to assign a recorder.  Report Out to the Full Group (30 minutes)
