MAGJS project Proposal Sriparna Majumdar Asha SF Feb, 2009

Overview MAGJS = Murschidabad Adibashi Gramin Janakalyan Samity. Was Founded in 1993 Aim: “committed to develop, facilitate and implement programs designed towards socio-economic upliftment and sustainablity.” Focus areas: health, education, environment and income generation initiatives that benefit women, adibashis and other vulnerable sections.

Education Related Activities Runs 2 schools currently. Different kinds of programs: Day Care Centre, Non formal education, early child education centre. Children belong to lower income families, parents are land less casual ‘bidi labourers’ or daily wage earners; age group: 3-6 yrs. Currently ~ 50 children enrolled. 4 teachers currently in 2 schools. Expansion plan: 8 more pre-primary schools in neighboring villages/localities in the Raninagar and Jalangi block of Murshidabad district.

Proposal Items kaya- Amount QanaraiSa (in Rs) Salary of Educator (Rs.1500 * 12months* 10 schls)1,80,000 Rent (Rs. 500 * 12months*10 schls)60,000 Educational Aids (Rs * 10 schls)15,000 Uniform (Rs.250 * 350 students)87,500 Nutrition (Rs. 5 * 350 students * 312 days)5,46,000 Activities (sports etc: Rs * 10 schools)30,000 Visits (Rs toward parent-teachers meeting)75,000 Health Camp doc (Rs 4000 for all 10 schls * 12 mo)48,000 Medicines: (Rs. 15 *350 students *12 months)63,000 Teaching aids (care givers: Rs * 12 *10 schls)1,44,000 Salary of accountant (Rs * 12 months)18,000 Salary of one MAGJS staff (Rs * 12 months)36,000 Auditor (Rs per year)3,000 One time investment for sheds and miscellaneous1,60,000 Total amount required for running 10 learning centers (calculated for first one year) 14,65,500 $ For first year

Major Questions Who coordinates the whole program across various states? Balwadis/elementary schools exist nearby but “services provided in those schools regarding food and education are not satisfactory” ?? What’s the gap? How does “non formal syllabus” help students get enrolled in mainstream schools? Need more details on current funding sources (financial report missing).. Who are the “corporate sponsors”? Site visit report very minimal and has some inconsistencies – focuses on one school, need more on the people running the org, 2 teachers/1 absent, age group 5-9 or 4-6?, etc. Empowering local community towards self sustenance – need more detail Not able to get a read on what the impact is/has been – need some success stories or “data”

MAGJS: UPDATES The creche schools run for 8 hours (10 am to 4 pm). Work as full time day care unit for working parents. They have received Rs. 50,000 for their two existing schools this year from a state government funding agency. 175 students have passed till now and 143 has got admission in local primary schools. Currently, an ASHA volunteer is on the task of doing the site visit.
