Colonial Empires alter Latin American culture Social Classes based on privilege. Peninsulares-born in Europe, held important positions. Creoles-descendants of European born in Latin America, controlled land & business. Mestizos-multiracial-European & Native American. Native Americans-lowest class used for labor until blacks arrived. Mulattos – multiracial-Africans &Europeans. Zambos-multiracial -Africans &Natives.

Economic Foundations Profit from colonies was key. gold & silver. Farming -longer lasting source of profit. large landowners & dependent peasants or slaves. Encomiendia - Spanish protect natives & educate in faith in return they work the estates/ mines- ex: work in silver mines Trade provided another avenue for profit. Natives buy European manufactured goods
