7 Deadly Sins of Volunteer Recruitment District 1 FLC 2006 Membership Presentation

Why the deadly sins?  Want to recruit the right way  Learn from recruiting the wrong way  Offers us solutions  Will you recognize yourself in one of these?

#7 – Not taking the time…  Are you listening?  Who are you inviting?  Do you know anything about them?  Likes & dislikes  Interests & pet-peeves  Are you using the right sales pitch?  Match the right ‘Gift(s) of Kin’ to your guest

#6 – Not choosing the right time…  Do you always bring them to a meeting first?  Try socials, family events or projects  Don’t overwhelm them  Match the guest to the right event  Treat your guests well

#5 – Fall into the BIC syndrome…  BIC – ‘Butt in chair’  Do they have a pulse?  Do you put them in charge right away?  Burn-out a possibility  Don’t overwhelm them

#4 – Assume that ‘No’ means ‘Never’…  A ‘no’ often makes us feel rejected  Ask why  Would they mind being contacted at a later date  WAIT  Keep in touch and ask again sometime

#3 – Recruiting for life…  Younger members may not be looking for a lifetime commitment  No longer have an upper age limit  Talk too much about our members who have been with us for ‘so’ long  Emphasize personal development & what Kin offers for their future

#2 – Going it alone…  No one member can do it alone  Full club support is needed  Plan, plan, plan  Oath for Growth  Get everyone involved  Treat Membership as a Service Project  Set up ‘Recruitment Teams’

#1 – “No one asked me!”  ASK, ASK, ASK  The number one reason we fail at recruiting is that we neglect to ASK!

New ideas for success…  Did you recognize your self or your club?  Were you able to take away some new ideas?  How can you be a successful recruiter?

7 Tips for successful recruiting…  Sell the right facet of Kin to your potential member  Choose the right time to introduce them to Kin  Don’t allow yourselves to fall into the BIC syndrome  No means ‘no’ not ‘never’ – wait and ask again  Don’t go about trying to recruit for life  100% club support is vital – no one can do this alone  ASK, ASK, ASK

Good Luck!
