Welcome Back! Class Expectations 2014 Mrs. Geisinger

Class Begins H Be in your seat when the bell rings. H Do not run down the hall or just be stepping over the threshold. H Be on time for lab after break. H Make time to visit your locker or lavatory during break or before class.

H Keep cell phones off and out of sight. H Put purses and bags on the floor out of aisles.

Come to class with necessary materials H Writing utensil. H Three ring binder or notebook and a folder. H There will be many handouts. H A 3 hole punch is available.

H Covered text book. H Calculators - basic with exponents(plus at least trig functions). H You need to know the functions and be able to use it for homework and on tests.

Expectations H If notes are given, they should be in your notebook. H Write down what is important for you. H Current Power Points will be available online

Questions H A shrug is not an answer. H You all know many things. H Build on what you know. H I prefer to have you find the answers with help.

Assignments H Are due, handed in,at the beginning of class. H Homework is to practice skills and identify areas in need of further explanation H Will not be accepted in red or pink ink!

Lab Reports H Lab reports will generally be due before the next lab period. H Make sure to include the title, purpose, data and answers to questions. H Look up concepts behind answers to questions – do not just Google them.

Lab and Assignment Additional notes H Must have the names of all participants if it is a group report. They must show group effort and not be “divide and conquer”. H College Level must be individual, unique reports in lab notebooks.

“If you and others have come jointly to a conclusion by way of your discussions, then you “own” part of that conclusion and you can present it as your own. After such discussion though, I expect the participants to write down their own thoughts when it comes to the presentation of results...If you really understand what you’ve been talking about, you should be able to explain it in your own words.” Professor at Moravian College Your answers show your understanding. Make them unique!

Late Work H A deduction of one letter grade per day will apply to late work. H After five days, no credit will be given. H Assignments are graded the day they are handed in, usually (99% of the time). H They will be returned when all are in or after five days.

Tests H Are usually given during double periods. H Must be made up immediately after an absence. We can use the unit lunch time for make ups. H Will be handed back when everyone has completed the test (Grades should be available the next day).

Class Rules H Be courteous to your classmates and teacher. H Respectfully correct the mistakes of others. H Listen when someone asks a question.

H Do not get up to throw away trash or sharpen pencils during class instruction.

H Do not sit on desks or lab tables. H Use of the bathroom during class time is for EMERGENCIES ONLY!!! (Plan your schedule accordingly)

Classroom Computers are for school work only! Class time is for class assignments only!

Computer Rules H Internet searches or must be based on class assignments. H You may come during study periods, if the computers are not in use, and do other school related work. H You are welcome to use the computers and printer before school, after school and during lunch.

Food Rules H No food or drinks; finish breakfast or lunch before class H Gum must stay in your mouth

H H Stop at the water fountain before class. H Water bottles must remain unobtrusive. H Let me know about health problems as soon as possible.

Sleep at home, not at school!

H Your head should not be down in class. H If you do not feel well, stay home or ask to go to the nurse.

Laboratory Work H Safety is #1 H Always use safety equipment. H Follow directions. H Clean-up when finished. HWear appropriate footwear.

Grading Policy

H Extra credit assignments are not given. H Spend the time on current assignments.

Study Strategies H Read over class notes and examples H Try homework problems H Ask questions H Know what variables and symbols stand for H Learn new vocabulary

Extra Strategies H Work with “Study buddies” H Come for extra help – before, after school or during lunch H Seek peer tutoring through NHS and guidance department

Responsibility H Be accountable. Don’t make excuses! H Know your class and lab schedule. H Keep track of due dates.

Class Time H We will have four periods per four day cycle. H One letter day we will have a double period, which will usually be one class period and one lab period. Occasionally both periods will be used for class or lab.

H Choose your lab partners with care. H You are responsible for your grades and behavior. H Parents will be contacted only for major offences.

End of Class H Clean up all materials or put them away for safe keeping.(Lock lab drawers) H Make sure to take all personal materials with you. H Do not store your books on the shelf.(Management is not responsible for things left in class.)

Dismissal H Students will be dismissed from their seats. H Do not line up by the door. It is a fire hazard. H The fire exit is to the rear of the building.

Code White H Go to physics stock room. H Make sure all doors are closed. H Sit silently until all clear is given. H No cell phones!

Be all that you can be! Remember: I don’t “give” grades, you earn them. End of presentation - beginning of the new school year!
