Investigation of Heart Rate By: Heather Miles, Katherine Lapetina, Matt Meador, John Bassler, Melissa Rucks, Andy Kelch This inquiry activity is a link between biology and math. Many high school curriculums for biology include a unit on the circulatory system and heart. This activity allows students to come to some understanding of how heart rate changes with increased activity and possibly how this relates to blood flow. Math curriculum requires that students are able to interpret graphs and manipulate data. Students will be able to pick a section of the graphs made from heart rate data and find the equations for those sections. This inquiry would link the biological units of circulation and the mathematical units of linear regression.

Procedure 1.Measure resting heart rate 2.Make sure to use saline on probes 3.Increase activity (running, jumping jacks) 4.Rest on ground to allow heart rate to decrease. 5.Measure final heart rate.

Data Resting heart rate=78beats/min. High activity rate=180 beats/min Resting heart rate #2=80beats/min.
