MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Drawings –Drawing list created (see next slide) includes inventory –Drawings being released ‘rolling wave’ method based on overall overlay check model (slide after) –Nigel Sage integrated latest Target model, outputs for me, dimensioned to beamline centre: l Bellows compressed shaft powered to top (1), to bottom (2) and unpowered on stop (3) l Bellows expanded (motorised stage raised), shaft unpowered on stop (4)

MICE Target Mechanical Design

Compressed bellows & lowest powered position (aligned with stator so ~5mm too low)

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Procurement of parts –‘Lead Items’ in manufacture either in-house, R Hare ICL or with outside suppliers, include l Stator parts (tube with collar, can and spacers) l 3 main core components (body, upper flange, lower flange) l Wire cutting of bearing blanks l Parts for welding of single piece shafts l Vanes –Behind schedule l 2 piece shaft parts as material not due till next week

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Transport box = complete »Welding jigs = complete »Heat treatment jig (not required) »Shaft metrology methodology defined –Talyrond 500mm column delivered and fitted yesterday (7/5/09)

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Centreless grind methodology defined –Issue with single piece that material was bent, no time to exchange or purchase elsewhere, correcting bends in-house »DLC set-up methodology –Need to contact Andy Fox again... »Welding and heat treatment methodology defined –All RFS placed through OM, contracts being set-up with Culham STG now

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Vane –RFS placed 17/04/09, but order only placed Tuesday this week! excuses made...new delivery 15/05/09 »Shaft components –Extra pieces required, will go to outside manufacture not to put strain on ‘internal’ manufacture »Magnet inspection = complete »Shaft manufacture –Continuing materials supply problems (bent, burnt, late companies folding) –More known about processes –New schedule (see next slide)

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Shaft manufacture – new schedule

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »Core welding trial complete –John RAL ‘signed up’ to do welds after great test piece produced »Stator components –All components (vacuum tube & collar, can & washers) expected to be delivered to Sheffield by 18 th, vacuum tube & collar probably couple of days earlier »Bearings –Wire cutting in progress expected 11/05/09 –Drawings to be finalised based on shaft geometry then order reamer while final geometry created »Insulation and grounding for stator complete –To be done

MICE Target Mechanical Design l Status of Target ref. Schedule »The bottom line... –Currently 2 piece shaft manufacture expected to be running a week late –Single piece shaft manufacture running on time (just) –All other manufacture appears to be progressing well –Do have some other work to do on peripheral components, expect all to be sorted by end of May (for June deliveries)
