2013 – Specification Changes Release Material to Plant Operator or Lab Technician Eliminated #8 Sieve for Acceptance 6” x 4 ¼” x 9” Box Sample Size Provide Storage Shed / Field Samples Core Density Shall not Exceed 97%

Specification Changes Eliminated 19mm binder with Increased Wearing RAP to 15% Eliminated F.A. “E” or “H” Requirement Target Gmb Plugs at 115mm (+/-)1.0mm Rich Bottom Voids – Design at 4.0% –Additional AC to achieve 2.5% Voids If Plant or Box Samples Fail for 3 Consecutive Days / Review JMF

2013 HMA - Back to Basics: –Plant and Field Sampling (PTM 746) –T-209, T-312, T-166 Equipment –8” / 12” sieves AASHTO T-30 – Max of 200g on each sieve smaller than the No. 4

AASHTO T-209 Removed air trapped in the sample - under pressure (27.5 ±2.5 mm Hg) and maintain for 15±2 min Measure water temp and IF different from (77 ±2°F) use adjustment in Section 8.1

AASHTO – T-312 Place compaction Mold and Base Plate in an oven at the required compaction temp. for a minimum of 30 mins. prior to the estimated beginning of compaction. Place the mixture in the mold in one lift. Before reusing the Mold, place it in the oven for at least 5 mins.

PTM 715 / AASHTO T-166 T-166 (Method A) –Immerse individual specimen for 4±1min.and record the immersed mass –Remove specimen from the bath, damp-dry specimen by blotting with damp towel as quickly as possible (not to exceed 5 s) and determine surface- dry mass

PTM -746 (Hauling unit) EQUIPMENT: –A flat bottom, high sided scoop –Putty knife for scraping the INSIDE of the scoop Starting low on the pile and extending upward, sample the mixture by creating an approximate 2’ long and 3” to 4” deep vertical furrow.

PTM -746 (Hauling unit con’t) If the mixture is sampled from at least two places in the truck, place the material removed in this manner on a mixing board, thoroughly mix, Form into a flat pile and quarter to provide a representative sample of the required size. Scrape the INSIDE of the scoop at each transfer point to incorporate any fines sticking to the inside of the scoop.

AASHTO R-47 Reducing Samples of HMA to Testing Size

Mechanical Splitter for use in quartering HMA samples.

HMA Issues on Data Input Wrong #200 C/F used when calculating gradation. When corrected – several gradations were out of Spec. Gradation on lower screen showed more material passing than previous screen Incorrect tolerance band used for gradations – correct band showed Six sieves with Deviations

HMA Issues on Data Input Volumeter calibration changed Dry weight by 900g however the Volume remained the same? Gmb plugs indicated the Dry specimen weight was heavier than the SSD resulting in negative absorption – if you reverse the weights the Va failed Dry and SSD weights were exactly the same – no absorption? Field cores too!

HMA Issues on Data Input Wrong Gmm used for density cores –2.435 was used for 95.4% density. –Actual was for 91.7% (Failure) 2 Gmb plugs had same weight –1 plug absorbed 7g –1 plug absorbed 23g –SAME Va % ???

HMA Issues on Data Input Gmb plug heights outside of the 110mm-120mm range yet still showed passing Va% Gmb plugs always had 5g – 6g H2O absorption- no matter the plug weight or height variances
