Evaluate Appropriateness of Virtualization CriteriaAuthentication Processor % Processor Time Candidates using low utilization are good candidates Network Interface Byte Total/Sec Packets/Sec Assign shared or dedicated NICs to virtual machines. Memory Pages/Sec Available Bytes Confirm that the host has available resources. Physical Disk Average disk/sec Good candidates can function with the available disk read performance. Isolation Requirements Applications that need to be isolated (not sharing a server with other applications) are good candidates. Availability Requirements Mission critical, high availability legacy applications are good candidates. Scalability Requirements Applications that will be expected to grow are good candidates, as a guest machine can be allocated more resources dynamically.

Moving Legacy Applications to Virtual Servers 1. Perform disk maintenance and defragmentation 2. Add firewall exception (RemoteAdmin) 3. Run Convert Physical Server Wizard in VMM Manager Operating SystemP2V Support Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 (SP4)Offline The Windows Server 2003 operating systems with Service Pack 1 (SP1) Online or Offline The Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition operating system Online or Offline The Windows XP operating systems with SP1Online or Offline Windows VistaNot Supported 64 Bit Windows Operating SystemsNot Supported Windows NTNot Supported
