SHRM Foundation Update Fundraising – 2009 Annual Campaign –Results, Trends, Recognition Programmatic Update –Research Grants –Scholarship Programs –Educational Products Fundraising – 2010 Annual Campaign –4 Ways Your State Council Can Support the Foundation

Fundraising Challenges Since mid-2008, fundraising has been “extraordinarily difficult” Stock market bouncing up and down Personal income is flat Consumer confidence is shaky Donors are wary Charitable giving in 2008 declined from 2007 levels – first decline in more than 50 years (Giving USA Foundation) Survey on philanthropy climate: confidence in summer 2009 at “historic lows” (Center on Philanthropy) 93% of charity leaders said their organizations are feeling the effects of the economy (Bridgespan Group)

Annual Campaign Success! Success in 2008: Annual Campaign increased 7% over Success in 2009: Exceeded goal by $3,300! 2009 Goal = $742, Actual = $745,949 Maintaining our high level of fundraising, in spite of economic trends! Annual Campaign Revenue:

Positive Trends Chapters and State Councils maintained strong levels of support – contributing nearly $462,000 in 2009 (62% of the Annual Campaign total). –This is down only 2% from the 2008 record high donation of $470,000 –This is up almost 5% from the 2007 donation of $441,000. Individual donations increased by 26% over 2008, from $128,000 in 2008 to a record high of almost $162,000. –More individual donors than at any other point in Foundation history. Corporate gifts and sponsorships have increased 29% since 2007 – from $62,000 to $80,000.

Your support enables the SHRM Foundation to  Support researchers who bring us greater understanding of the complexities of HR (academic research grants)  Assist individuals in their pursuit of greater academic credentials (scholarship programs)  Create materials that explain how practitioners can capitalize on the new knowledge that research provides (educational products) SHRM Foundation Programs

Research Grants The SHRM Foundation is the leading funder of HR research.  Provides multi-year grants for high-impact, original HR research  $2.3 million funded since 1996, more than 100 research projects  Relevant, actionable insights for HR practitioners  Broad range of research topics, including: –Managing Global Talent –Employee Engagement –Dynamic Competencies in Global Leaders –Retention of an Older Workforce –Making Virtual Teams More Effective

Research Highlights Brochure  “Research Highlights Brochure” has summaries of recently completed, SHRM Foundation-funded research studies  Presents key findings and implications for practice for HR practitioners. Research shows what works and builds HR’s credibility.

Scholarship Programs The SHRM Foundation awards more than $150,000 annually in scholarships.  $100,000 annually to support SHRM members pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree or professional certification. –Online Application available in late March –Applications are due July 15  $50,000 annually for SHRM student members for education or professional certification –Online Application; applications are due October 15

Educational Products Effective Practice Guidelines Concise summary of what’s known based on research. Easy to read; accessible for practitioners DVD Series Complete teaching tool with discussion guide and powerpoint slides Real-world case studies of successful companies, highlighting strategic HR in action Educational products identify emerging trends and help HR practitioners become strategic business leaders

1. Submit a Pledge Form Majority of revenue is received in 4 th quarter  GOAL = Secure pledges or gifts from 40% of State Councils (and 20% of chapters) by June 30. 2. Conduct a Leadership Campaign “Lead by Example” Demonstrate your commitment to the SHRM Foundation’s mission and programs and your leadership within the HR profession. GOAL = Secure 100% participation in the campaign among State Council Directors … and all State Council board members and Chapter board members.

3. Donate a Silent Auction Item GOAL = Raise $70,000 from silent auctions –Annual Conference (Partners Reception) –Online Auction –Leadership Conference New, unique and unusual items will add variety and energize our guests! –Packages: Wine-Lovers’, Sports Fan, Dream Kitchen, and more! –Donate by April 16, 2010
