New France France was claiming more land in what are today Canada and the north western United States Jacques Cartier explored the St Lawrence River in 1500’s began an important partnership with the Huron Indians Quebec was the first French settlement in North America Starting in the 1630 French’s Catholic missionaries was to convert the Indians to began arriving in New France The aim of the missionaries was to convert the Indians to the Catholic Region

New Netherland Henry Hudson had claimed this area for the Netherlands in 1609 Ships arrived at the public dock on the East River The center of New Amsterdam grew up around the fort, the market place, the church, and the windmill were there Streets were made from the paths that farmers used to travel to and from the town center In 1638 Swedish settlers founded the colony of New Sweden to the southern of New Netherland

Exploring New France As English and Dutch colonists moved into parts of New France, fighting over the fur trade began among the settlers Indian Tribes also experienced internecine conflicts or fighting between groups In 1684 La Salle tried to start a settlement near the mouth of Mississippi River but hardships led the disagreement among the settlers The Huron and the Iroquois Indians want to control lands in presents day Canada Salle claimed the entire Mississippi River valley for France and named the region Louisiana in honor of King Louis
