1 News and Miscellaneous UPO Mar Didier Contardo, Jeff Spalding o General news o ESP and Manpower needs o Cost scale for phase 2 o June Upgrade week Jun. 3 o 2013 simulation and other studies for phase 2

General news o L1-trigger TDR released for CWR on Feb Comments by Mar. 6 -Presentation and release to LHCC Mar. 12 -Cost estimate being reviewed by FB sub-committee - report Mar. 6 -Schedule being reviewed by UC – by next TDR release o MoUs for Apr. RRB and WBS and milestones status -Andrzej reviewing MoU content for Pixels, and HCAL next week -WBS and milestones still proceeding o GEM LS2 proposal -Review on Feb. 18: -Report presentation at MB Mar. 11 o GRPC R&D proposal -Answers to review panel received Feb.28 2

ESP2013 snapshot 3 Pledges are open: Group conveners can start to check commitments

4 Joe asked Projects and Coordination areas to estimate the effort and to identify additional need in each area Aim to complete this estimate-template by the end of next week

Cost scale for phase 2 o Cost scale for Phase 2 We had been planning to provide a cost scale for the RRB in October, however… there are requests to provide some early information for FAs. Joe asks us to have something by late March for the RRB in April – This will NOT be an EOI or LOI, but will be an update to the EOI that CMS submitted in 2007, with updated estimates for cost and time scales. – Proposing a very short document. With your input, UC and TC will make a skeleton version in next 2 weeks for discussion at next UPO. Goal is to provide a draft for MB/FB in 3 weeks! 5

June Upgrade Week Monday-Friday June 3-7 DESY, Hamburg Block timetable & travel information are on the web site. More details to follow. Registration is open today We need to book rooms for parallel sessions: – Please, send your request by end of next week (with estimate of number of participants) 6

Simulation studies in S1: Studies with Phase 1 detectors  Establish upgrades needed for current detectors for Phase 2 Timeline is to have results at the Upgrade week in DESY (Jun. 3) o Effect of radiation-aging on performance of the Phase 1 detector by LS3 -PU 60/70 - Luminosity 2.4 E34 - BS 25ns -Tracker/ECAL/HCAL aging emulation for 300(/500) fb -1 o Effect on the Phase 1 detector performance of HL-LHC pile-up o Benefit to increase rate at L1 and HLT output -PU “125/140”* - full crossing angle compensation - leveled luminosity 5 E34 -Aging only for detectors that will not be upgraded in phase 2 for (1000/)3000 fb -1 Release is CMSSW_6_1_x - full simulation  code integration Mar. 7 -Eric’s presentation plus project reports * Under discussion with ATLAS Note: Issue with Calorimeter Energy Flow at high pile-up has to be solved by time of MC production

Simulation studies in S2: Studies with new detectors and calorimeter smearing modules  Define Straw man concepts for Forward Detector Timeline is to have first results at the Upgrade week in DESY (Jun. 3) Follow-up at ECFA workshop Oct. 2-4 and Upgrade week Oct. 21 o Demonstrate pile-up mitigation with tracking and/or precise timing up to η = 4 o Establish resolution needed in forward calorimeters -PU 125/140 - full crossing angle compensation - leveled luminosity 5 E34 -EB/HB aging 1000 fb fb -1 -EE/HE/HF no rad damage (fixed in phase 2) Release is CMSSW_6_1_x Fast Simulation*  code integration to be defined ?  Need to re-activate early CMS Fast Sim  Implement tracking volumes and material, and Jet reconstruction using tracks  Implement timing measurement and resolution smearing, and Jet reconstruction using timing * Could be used for Muons extension simulation

Simulation studies in S3: Studies with Phase 2 Straw man detector concepts  Establish performance and physics reach - define phase 2 TP scope -PU 125/140 - full crossing angle compensation - leveled luminosity 5 E34 o Straw men (1a): Strip Tracker phase 2 (and phase 1 other sub-systems) -LB and BE concepts  first version up to Stubs/RecHits Release is CMSSW_6_1_x FullSim  code integration Mar. 7  L1-Trigger track emulation to study tracking trigger requirements (Pt-min, Pt, IP res.)  Prepare track reconstruction with new tracker configurations o Straw man (1b): New EE (eg shashlik) and maintain HE and HF Release is CMSSW_6_1_x FastSim  code integration? Timeline is to have first results at the Upgrade week in DESY (Jun. 3) Follow-up at ECFA workshop Oct. 2-4 and Upgrade week Oct. 21 o Straw man (2)?: New EE (eg shashlik) and maintain HE and HF + Strip Tracker phase 2 Release is CMSSW_6_1_x Fast/FullSim?  code integration June? MC summer production window  Tracker code improvements - Track reconstruction  First version of GED? Timeline is to have first results at ECFA workshop Oct. 2-4 and Upgrade week Oct. 21 o Straw man (3): Forward Detector + Tracker phase 2 Release is CMSSW_6_1_x Fast/FullSim?  code integration Oct? Timeline is end 2013 to be ready for phase 2 TP MC production early 2014

Simulation studies in o We need to establish the metric of studies – software tools – MC samples… eg: -How and when can we merge Tracker and Calorimeter Straw men? in full sim or in fast sim with implementation of track reconstruction ? -What are the studies and samples needed for S1, S2 and S3 Input so far from TTI group: 2 x 15M min bias events + signal event including particle gun  about 1M event at high pile-up with Straw men (1a) … Need planning, MC windows of opportunity summer 2013 and first half of 2014 o Discussion at XC meeting Feb. 8 -Re-define GED mandate including developments for upgrade studies -Create a Task Force to ensure proper tool developments for simulation studies  see charge attached to the agenda for comments -GED and TF Mandates will be discussed at the EB next week -Following we will proceed identifying TF chairs and contributors, membership will include representative of Offline/Simulation, PPD, GED, selected POG and Upgrade Projects and WG, and Future Physics

Other inputs – studies to define phase 2 TP scope 11 o Physics simulation studies at generator level  Establish benefit from acceptance extension Timeline is to have results at the Upgrade week in DESY (Jun. 3) o TC studies  Inputs to validate detector Straw man concepts Timeline for first results at the Upgrade week in DESY (Jun. 3) -Issues with replacement of calorimeters -Issues with modification of triplets and shielding - changing CMS eta coverage and forward configuration -Issues maintaining detectors during phase 2 … Urgent need for radiation modeling Block geometries to answer major questions – considering changing overall geometry For example: What happens to the rad map if a block of W (for example) is placed at the Totem position up to, say eta=4? - Effect of “neutron bottle” How should we organize this? (18 m ESP available for this task)

Other inputs – studies to define phase 2 TP scope 12 o Longevity documents Tracker, ECAL, HCAL, Electronics  Establish which detectors need to be replaced and when -Document draft including aging model by CMS week Apr. 8 -Final document with performance studies by Upgrade week in DESY Jun. 3  Establish which electronics components need to be replaced -Document by Upgrade week in DESY Jun. 3 o Cost estimate  Including options for detector concepts -Pre-view at Upgrade week in DESY Jun. 3 -Presentation at RRB Oct. 28
