LESSON 45: I Can be a good Example for my Family “Lesson 45: I Can Be a Good Example for My Family,” Primary 3: Choose the Right B, (1994),222

Purpose To help the children understand that they can be good examples for their families.

OUR OPENING PRAYER WILL BE GIVEN BY (Enter name here)

We want everybody to stand up, close your eyes, and hold hands. I’m going to Lead the first person by the hand.

Follow me.

Where did we end up? By following me, you were all able to find your way safely to the picture of the Savior.

Would everyone please return to your seats.

Why would a leader be helpful in a dark place? . What is a good example?

A good example could be like a leader guiding us to safety.

Just as following the leader’s voice brought us safely to the picture of Jesus Christ, so too can following the words of the prophet allow us to return to Heavenly Father and Jesus someday.

What good examples have helped you to be closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus?

Jesus Christ taught that we should be good examples for others. Let’s Read 3 Nephi 12:16.

16 Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

When we set good examples for others, we are like lights in the darkness to people to show them the right way to live.

Listen how Jayant did what Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ wanted in the following story:

“Jayant loved the Church even before he became a member. He liked to listen to his uncle talk about the gospel and tell how he had been the first person from India to join the Church in Fiji.

“After listening to the missionaries, Jayant asked his parents if he might join the Church. They gave their permission, and Jayant tried hard to be a missionary to his family by living the principles of the gospel and being a good example.

“Before long Jayant’s father and brother were baptized, but his mother hesitated. Her grandfather had been an important Hindu priest in India, and she was worried about what her family would say if she became a [Latter-day Saint].

Because of the example of her son, however, she too finally joined the Church.

“Now all of Jayant’s family are active in their branch in Suva, Fiji, and they know the love and joy that come from serving our Father in Heaven” (“A Good Example,” Friend, Mar. 1974, p. 48).

How did Jayant set a good example for his family? What effect did Jayant’s good example have on his family?

When we do this, we help others want to live righteously also. When we do what Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ want us to do, we are doing what is right and obeying the commandments. When we do this, we help others want to live righteously also.

Let’s Play a little game. We have some strips that explain different ways in which we can be good examples for our families. Teacher’s note: refer to manual for this part of the lesson so students get a hands on experience.

Try saying the following : “I can be a good example for my family by being _______________,” filling in the blank with the word or phrase on the wordstrip For example, “I can be a good example for my family by being a peacemaker.”

How did Lehi’s sons react when he asked them to return to Jerusalem for the brass plates (see 1 Nephi 3:4–5)? After Laman and Lemuel complained and said they did not want to go, Nephi told how he felt. Let’s Read 1 Nephi 3:7.

7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

How did Nephi set a good example for his brothers? How can you set a good example by being obedient?

Bruce saw his mother busily getting his little sister ready for church. He knew she still had to get herself ready and dress the baby. Bruce decided to help his mother. He went into the baby’s room and dressed him. Bruce’s mother was grateful for his help. She smiled and gave Bruce a big hug and a kiss.

What did Bruce do that set a good example for his family? How can you set a good example by being helpful?

Let’s sing a song “When we’re Helping”

When we’re Helping 1. When we’re helping, we’re happy, And we sing as we go; And we like to help mother*, For we all love her so. 2. Tra la la la la la la, Tra la la la la la, Tra la la la la la la, Tra la la la la la. * Alternate words: father, grandma, grandpa Words: Wallace F. Bennett, 1898–1993 Music: German folk song

TESTIMONY I want to bear my testimony of the importance of being a good example for your family. Younger brothers and sisters will look up to you and they will also choose the right way and follow your good example.

Most of the people living in Jerusalem 600 years before the birth of Christ were wicked. God sent prophets to tell them to repent, but they would not listen.

Lehi was a prophet. He prayed that the people would repent. While he was praying, a pillar of fire appeared. God told and showed Lehi many things.

Lehi returned home and had a vision. He saw God surrounded by many angels. The angels were singing and praising God.

In his vision Lehi was given a book that told what would happen in the future. He read that Jerusalem would be destroyed because the people were wicked.

Lehi told the people that Jerusalem would be destroyed. He also told of the coming of Jesus. The people were angry and tried to kill Lehi, but the Lord protected him.

The Lord was pleased with Lehi and one night spoke to him in a dream. He told Lehi to take his family and leave Jerusalem. Lehi obeyed the Lord.

Lehi’s family packed food and tents. They left their house and their gold and silver and traveled into the wilderness.

Lehi and his wife, Sariah, had four sons. Their names were Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi. After traveling for three days, Lehi’s family camped in a valley near a river.

Lehi built an altar from stones and made an offering to God. He thanked God for saving his family from being destroyed.

Lehi named the river Laman and the valley Lemuel. Lehi wanted his sons to be like the river and valley, continually flowing to God and steadfastly keeping the commandments.

Laman and Lemuel thought their father was foolish for leaving Jerusalem and their riches. They did not believe that Jerusalem would be destroyed.

Nephi wanted to understand the things Lehi had seen. He prayed to know if his father had done the right thing by leaving Jerusalem.

Jesus Christ visited Nephi and told him that Lehi’s words were true. Nephi believed and did not rebel as Laman and Lemuel did.

Nephi told his brothers what Jesus had told him. Sam believed Nephi, but Laman and Lemuel would not believe.

The Lord promised Nephi that he would be blessed because of his faith. He would become a leader over his brothers.

Lehi told Nephi that the Lord wanted him and his brothers to go back to Jerusalem. They were to get the brass plates from a man named Laban.

The brass plates were important records. They told about Lehi’s forefathers and contained the words of God revealed through the prophets.

Laman and Lemuel did not want to return to get the brass plates. They said it would be too hard to do. They did not have faith in the Lord.

Nephi wanted to obey the Lord He knew the Lord would help him and his brothers get the brass plates from Laban. What did they leave behind?

Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi traveled back to Jerusalem to get the brass plates.

1 Nephi 3:4–5 4 Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me that thou and thy brothers should go unto the house of Laban, and seek the records, and bring them down hither into the wilderness.  5 And now, behold thy brothers murmur, saying it is a hard thing which I have required of them; but behold I have not required it of them, but it is a commandment of the Lord.
