A written record of science Lab Reports A written record of science

What is a Lab report Tool to record data and process in a clear format. A method to give others the ability to reproduce your experiment. A document of your actions and findings.

Why do we do lab reports? To help develop clear communication skills. To focus and direct our findings in a comprehensive manner. To allow for later review and easy reference.

Formal Report Format Abstract Introduction Data & Observations (typed from lab notebook)* Calculations (if any)* Summary of Results Discussion (including error analysis) Conclusion Reference *Deviation from the ACS journal format is necessary for some parts of the report in order for instructors to check on students' laboratory skills and calculations.

Our Lab reports Title Introduction Data and Observations (written for the raw data collected during the experiment) Calculations (if needed) Summary of results Discussion References (if needed)

Introduction This is a basic description of what you are going to do and how. This does not include results or findings. EXAMPLE: Penny Lab is to study electro-plating and metal bonding to form a new alloy. The pennies will be placed in a solution of Sodium Hydroxide and dissolved Zinc metal to plate the copper with zinc. The pennies will be removed using tongs and some will be used for the second segment where the penny is heated to induce (cause) the alloy brass to form.

Data and Observations First, it tells what and how much for each chemical and piece of equipment to be used. Second, it details the basic steps of the procedure, sometimes this is placed in a section called procedure. Last, it details what was seen and happened as the lab unfolded.

Calculations and Summary Calculations are made for and math needed for results. Just write out the formula with your numbers in the proper spots and show your answer. Summary gives the basic review of the end outcome to the experiment.

Discussion and References Discussion includes explanation of what went well or wrong and how to improve the process or results. Suggestions for a new procedure or better one. References include any other tools used to supply information, answers, or process data.

What to expect We will have lab reports for every lab. These will be graded and checked (easy points if done) We will do only 3 formal lab in this class. These skills are important for anyone who ever has to make a report of an event.
