Intro. to Computer Mediated Communication UT Dallas ATEC 3325 Summer 2008 Dr. Gooch

ATEC 3325 Syllabus Course Description: –Both a reading and writing intensive course –Read, analyze and respond intelligently with position support Grading Criteria: –College-level writing –Rigorously proofread – spelling, grammar, mechanics –Professionalism – avoid violations of copyright Texts: –Three- about communication – Add : MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers

ATEC 3325 Syllabus 3 formal essays: College level writing Correct spelling and grammar Appropriately identify all sources, even your own Works Cited Assignment Online posts Attendance/participation

ATEC 3325 Syllabus Advisory Note: Page length plus Works Cited page(s) MLA must be used correctly Credible and authentic sources only – NO Wikipedia or Spark Notes type sources Web resources must be clearly and correctly referenced

ATEC 3325 Syllabus Plagiarism and Copyright –Borrowed graphics or content must be referenced correctly Includes books, course lectures, websites, any form of print or electronic media –All submissions must be your unique work with borrowed content properly cited –Fully reference your previous work –Use the Writing Center at McDermott Library and consider RefWorks (ask at the library) or MSWord 2007 References tab

Plagiarism Using another’s work submitting or incorporating it in one’s own written work offered for credit without appropriate attribution.

False References Consult the MLA Handbook. Every detail of referencing your sources is precisely prescribed: –Title, author, publication data –Punctuation, spacing, title page, order of appearance, page numbers, etc. Doing it correctly takes time.

Bibliography vs. Works Cited A bibliography (or, works consulted page) will include every consulted source for information and personal edification A Works Cited page identifies only those sources actually used (and therefore cited) in the written paper. Refer to the MLA Handbook for exact details ( alpha? numerical? initials? date? )

Internet Resources Availability doesn’t equal quality Properly cite your Internet resources Useful web address:

A few words

Common ATEC Allegations Plagiarism –No in-text references –No quotation marks“ exact words” –Poorly paraphrased –No Works Cited page –Missing references False References –Insufficient information –Wrong information

Common Excuses I’ve never written a paper before. I didn’t know what MLA was so I ignored that assignment requirement. No one told me the I had to do it this way. Where I come from, it is a sign of respect to use someone else’s words without acknowledgement. I didn’t have time to do it correctly.

A Final Note - The paper/assignment you submit is the one that gets evaluated. There are no ‘do-overs’ in academia: – do the assignment yourself – do the assignment correctly – submit the assignment on time – use the prescribed format Be certain your name is on your paper!
