PLEASE DO NOW  Make sure your HW is IN THE HW BIN with your name on it.  CLEAR YOUR DESK except for your Do Now, Agenda and a pen/pencil.  When the bell rings immediately go to level 0 and begin your do now.

Agenda  Please Do Now  Grammar Lesson: Deleting Material  Thesis and Body Paragraphs  Writer’s Workshop  Vocab Review  Summarize

Objectives  Draft thesis and body paragraphs for our essay.  Delete material primarily because it disturbs the flow of a paragraph.

Deleting Material Delete when…Keep when…Change when… The sentence sounds awkward or out of place. The sentences does not connect back to the rest of the paragraph or text. The current sentence gives detailed and relevant information. The current sentence connects back to the paragraph or passage better than the other answer choices. Another answer choice is more detailed or relevant. Another answer choice connects better to the rest of the paragraph or passage.

Thesis Paragraphs  You never get a second chance to make a first impression. The opening paragraph of your paper will provide your readers with their initial impressions of your argument, your writing style, and the overall quality of your work  Your introduction is an important road map for the rest of your paper. Your introduction conveys a lot of information to your readers. You can let them know what your topic is, why it is important, and how you plan to proceed with your discussion.  Ideally, your introduction will make your readers want to read your paper. The introduction should capture your readers' interest, making them want to read the rest of your paper.

Paragraph #1 – Key elements of your Introduction  Opening Statement – This doesn’t have to be “catchy” but it should be an interesting way to start the essay and connect to the quote.  Background Knowledge/Context – Explain any information necessary to understanding the quote.  Thesis Statement

Model Introduction The greatest novels sometimes present controversial topics through the eyes of children. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in 1936 in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. The novel follows the unjust trial of a black man who is wrongly accused of raping a white woman. Atticus Finch, a respected white man, chooses to defend this black man in court. Through this experience, Atticus’s daughter, Scout, comes to term with the idea of racism. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout Finch argues against racism and believes that all people are the same when she states, “I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.” This belief is shown in the book through Scout’s admiration or her father, who defends a black man in court, her ultimate appreciation of the outcast, Boo Radley, and the Finch’s closeness to the black community in Maycomb.

Body Paragraphs  Argument –  Evidence to support (Include quotes, an explanation of example, and explain why this supports your thesis statement)

Model Body Paragraph Scout Finch is the only person in To Kill a Mockingbird to see or talk to Boo Radley. At the beginning of the novel, Scout feared Boo. In a conversation with her brother, Scout is confused: “’Thank who?’ I asked. ‘Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you.’ My stomach turned to water and I nearly threw up when Jem held out the blanket and crept twoard me. ‘He sneaked out of the house-turn ‘round-sneaked up, an’ went like this! (Lee, p. 72).” This quote shows how the thought of Boo Radley even close to her made Scout nauseous in the beginning. The thought of even being near his house was horrible. However, by the end of the novel, Scout has a different view of Boo. She actually goes to his house and admits, “Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough” (p. 279). Scout has clearly learned a lot about what it means to look past what people look like and try and understand them for who they are inside.

Essay Organizer  Complete the Introduction part of your essay organizer.  If you complete this early, begin working on your body paragraphs.
