English 9 Day 35 Objective: To review key events in part 1 and formulate thesis statement in preparation for EA

Part 1 Review Pair up! Each pair will be given a chapter from Part 1. In 10 minutes, come up with a few key events from the chapter or a summary of the chapter. 2 = chapters 1 and = number of chapter (i.e. 3s do chapter 3) Jacks = chapter 11 Each group share your ideas.

Big Ideas You each have a list of important passages from Part 1. Read them and decide on a few categories for the quotes. (a quote could go into more than one category) Place the quotes in the appropriate category. We will add to these as we read.

Analysis Essay Write a passage analysis of a key coming-of-age scene from To Kill a Mockingbird. After annotating the text to analyze Harper Lee’s use of literary elements in your selected passage, write an essay explaining how the literary elements in this passage help develop a theme or key idea in the novel.

Looking at the passages we have, choose one to work with as a class. Copy it. Annotate it. What key idea does it convey? How is it a coming of age moment? What literary devices does the author use? What is the effect of these devices? How is this passage connected to a larger, important idea or message?

Now, decide on a potential thesis statement we can use. Remember: a thesis statement Is the main idea for the entire essay Must include your main points (topics for body paragraphs)
