SKPB 1023 CALL AS A METHOD TO DEVELOP STUDY SKILLS

INTRODUCTION: COMPUTERS HAVE EMERGED AS ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING AND MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS IN THE EDUCATIONAL AREA. IT IS BEING USED IN THE CLASSROOMS FOR TEACHING PURPOSES. HOLDS GREAT SIGNIFICANCE FOR LANGUAGE LEARNING AND CAN DEVELOP STUDY SKILLS. THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDY SKILLS : PLACING TEACHERS AS A ROLE OF A TRANSMITTER OF KNOWLEDGE AND STUDENTS AS PASSIVE RECIPIENTS IS A TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHOD. FOCUS ON LEARNER AUTONOMY, INVOLVEMENT, GENERATED SYLLABI AND CREATION OF RELAXED ATMOSPHERE OF LEARNING ARE THE CURRENT TREND IN THE FIELD OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING. THE CONCEPT OF THE INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION IS INCREASINGLY GAINING ATTENTION.

STUDY SKILL : AN INSIGHT  A general term ‘study skills’ encompasses a wide variety of traits, associated with personal growth and development arranging from attitudes to behaviours.  Some of the study skills : NEW LEARNING STYLES NETWORKING WITH OTHER STUDENTS ACQUIRING COMMUNICATION SKILLS ABILITY TO LISTEN TO LECTURE READING A BOOK AND TAKING NOTES PARTICIPATING IN THE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

 COMPUTERS AND LANGUAGE LEARNING : The judicious integration can enable students to organize and process their knowledge at the touch of the keyboard buttons. Computers is a teaching aids have been placed at the disposal of language teachers. Computers are now used as effective tools in teaching grammar, vocabulary, syntax and comprehension in developing interactive communication skills and creating writing activities. ADVANTAGES OF A CALL CLASSROOM : Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) enhances the motivation level of students. Teachers can customize any CALL program to the syllabus or course design that they are using to increase the level of proficiency in students. Computers are useful for in-group activities and imparting individualized instruction. There are no limitations with regards of practice sessions or time.

ADVANTAGES The immediate feedback given by the computer helps the students to analyse patterns in the language. The novelty is the integral part of the call programs increase the level of motivation. Helping learn a foreign language or any second language also provide some computer literacy. Provide the information requested in the blink of an eye. Students will not only learn about the number of words but also the usage of it as well.

The author and programmer does not share the same concerns as the author is bound to be a subject expert while the programmer is mostly a technician. There is a little chance for teachers to add or modify the existing programmes since most of it locked up prevent pirating. The time spent on preparation and programming can be quite lengthy running to hours and days. The rapidity with which computer integrated activities and taking place in the academic atmosphere shows that the drawbacks found in the call methods are temporary.
