Journal: List the five members of the Simpsons family. Then list the five basic freedoms covered in the First Amendment.

The Bill of Rights After writing the Constitution, the framers of our government quickly realized that the document said nothing about the rights of the American people. So they created the first set of amendments, or changes, to the Constitution These changes became known as the “Bill of Rights”

The First Amendment The first amendment granted the following rights (SPPAR); 1. Freedom of Speech 2. Freedom of Press 3. Freedom of Petition 4. Freedom of Assembly 5. Freedom of Religion

Freedom of Speech Americans have the right to speak without fear of punishment The “free flow” of ideas is essential to a democratic government

Freedom of Petition Americans can petition the government for a change in their policies

Freedom of Press The press is protected from government censorship (the power to review, change, or prevent publication) Journalists cannot be arrested/punished for criticizing the government or public officials However, the press has the responsibilty to present the news ACCURATELY

Freedom of Assembly Americans have the right to assemble in protest, as long as it is done PEACEFULLY

U.S. Supreme Court NATIONAL SOCIALIST PARTY v. SKOKIE, 432 U.S. 43 (1977) 432 U.S. 43 NATIONAL SOCIALIST PARTY OF AMERICA ET AL. v. VILLAGE OF SKOKIE ON PETITION FOR WRIT OF CERTIORARI TO THE SUPREME COURT OF ILLINOIS No Decided June 14, 1977 The Illinois Supreme Court denied a stay of the trial court's injunction prohibiting petitioners from marching, walking, or parading in the uniform of the National Socialist Party of America or otherwise displaying the swastika, and from distributing pamphlets or displaying materials inciting or promoting hatred against Jews or persons of any faith, ancestry, or race, and also denied leave for an expedited appeal.

Freedom of Religion Americans are allowed to choose which religion, if any, they want to believe in This amendment separates church and state – Some interpret this to mean that religion should play no role in government – Others interpret this to mean that the government cannot establish an official religion or create laws to interfer with worship
