What is rhetoric? RHETORIC-  the study of effective speaking and writing.  Art of persuasion.  Rhetorical question?  A question to which no answer is expected, often used for rhetorical effect.

Examining the rhetorical appeals. Aristotle – Greek philosopher, one of the first to create a Western system of philosophy and beliefs. master of the art of persuasion, points out the three main tactics to be employed if one wished to succeed in the business of persuasion. In Greek, they are: 1. ETHOS 2. PATHOS 3. LOGOS

The Art of Rhetoric ETHOS (Ethical Appeal): It signifies a person’s character. This is where you establish yourself as a voice that should be heard. Of the three, it should come first in an argument or debate. CREDIBILITY-why you should be heard?

The Art of Rhetoric PATHOS (Emotional Appeal): It is the motivating factor in your speech. It arouses the passions of the listeners, getting their emotions running in the direction of the action to be taken. EMOTIONAL-MOTIVATING factor of speech. FEEL what you want them to feel.

The Art of Rhetoric LOGOS (Logical Appeal): It is the command of reasons. Once you have established a reason to be heard and have your audience with you emotionally, you produce all the reasons why they should take a certain action. LOGICAL –REASON and PURPOSE: What do you want them to DO? Why should they do what you want? “You tell them, they do it!”
