Presentation transcript:

Immediacy, hypermediacy and Remediation Transparent Immediacy (a Style of visual representation whose goal is to make the viewer forget of the medium(Photographic, film, cinemar ect.) and believe that he is in the presence of the objects of representation). - Virtual reality is central. The viewer should forget that she is in fact wearing a computer interface (or sitting in a cinemachair) and accept the graphic image that is offers as her own visual world. - Immediacy is supposed to make this computer interface ”natural” rather than arbitrary.

- designers often say they want ”interfaceless” interfaces, in which there will be no recognizable electronic tools – no buttons, windows, scroll bars, or even icons as such. Instead the user will move through the space interacting with the objects ”naturally” as she does in the physical world”. - We can have transparent in three ways: - Linear perspective (a form of mathematical projection through which three-dimensional objects are represented on a two-dimensional surface. A key feature in the style of transparent immediacy purposed by western painting from the Renaissance until the late nineteenth century)

- erasive medium: erase the surface of the picture-plane (a very difficult technique). - automate the technique of linear perspective (the photography) Alberti’s windows is very popular: He draw an recangle of whatever size he wants, which he regards as an open window through which the subject to be painted is seen.

Hypermediacy (A style of visual representation whose goal is to remind the viewer of the medium). Its raw ingredients are images, sound, text, animation and video, which can be brought together in any combination. We are working with windows interfaces, where each grafical window has its own visual point of view. The multiplicity of windows and the heterogeneity of their contents mean that the user is repeatedly brought back into contact with the interface.

Figure1.5 page 39 shows a collage which is regarded as ”the central technique of twentieth-century visual art”. Figure 1.6 and 1.7 from USA TODAY shows how to use frames and place text and numbers and video images around the frames.

The evolution of recording techniques also changed the nature of live performance. It started with Kiss, Alice coper and David Bowie where the sound and visual spectacle were important. Today U2 use celebrations of media on stage. World Wide Web is perhaps our culture’s most influential expression of hypermediacy When the user cliks on an underlined phrase or an iconic anchor on a web page, a link is activated that calls up another page. The new material usually appears in the original window and erases the previous text or graphic, although the action of clocking may instead create a seperate frame within the same window or a new window laid over the first.

Remediation Definition ”the anthropotropic process by which new media technologies improve upon or remedy prior technologies”. The very act of remediation, however, ensures that the older medium cannot be entirely effaced; the new medium remains dependent on the older one in acknowledged or unacknowledged ways.

Like television film is also trying to absorb and repurpose digital technology. The stunt in film or special effects should look as ”natural” as possible, as if the camera were simply capturing what really happend in the light.
