Introduction Rhode Island was founded in 1637. Rhode Island was founded by William and Hutchinson.

First People Long before, European arrival Rhode Island was home to a lot of Indians. The settlement was home to lots of Indians including the most powerful tribe called the Narragansett.

Early Settlers Rhode Island was started by people wanting religious freedom. Some cities were Providence (the capital), East Greenwich, Wickford, New Port, Portsmouth, Bristol, Paxtuxet.

Life in the colony Colonists first built little amount of farms and towns in the wilderness. Colonist raised animals for a lot of meat ,eggs, milk and, cheese. They fished for clams, shrimp, and other seafood. Education was not very important in the Rhode Island colony. Other colonies used schools for practicing religious beliefs. In 1647 Massachusetts passed a law to start pubic schools. Most Rhode Island colonists farmed and worked in the house all day. Built farms and towns in the colony and daily life was filled with many chores. Women cooked , cleaned, and raised children. Corn was the main cash crop.

Work and Trade Fished and Farmed and they also grew crops, had very rich soil, grew corn, onions, and apples, sold wood and they trees and brought slaves from Africa. The slaves also had to work the farmers land and take care of the animals. By 1700 some farmers owned large lands called plantations they were mostly located by the coast. Many Rhode Island farmers owned apple orchards. Apple picking was hard and took many people to do the job. Many Rhode Island settlers worked in coastal towns. Some colonists worked in shipping or selling goods.

Colony’s Exports The colony exported wood, trees, wool, and, cheese. There major cash crop was corn. The colonies crops were grown on plantations. Where the mostly exported goods went to was to England or to other American colonies.

Community and Religion There was many disagreements at first. Only white men owning land can vote. People of many faiths came to Rhode Island. They didn’t want this so they called the island Rogue’s Island.

Becoming a State Declaration of Independence said that the colonies were states, free from British rule. The United States Constitution said that they were the 13th to join the union. The state is the 39th state alphabetically. Rhode Island gained statehood in 1776.

Important facts The Rhode Island colony was one of the colonies in the New England group. It is Bordered by Massachusetts it’s southern border is the Atlantic ocean. The Native Americans there before they were also participated in many types of games including canoe races.

More Important facts A lot of people from the colony went whaling and sometimes lost there lives. They fished for fish for there oil. The settlers worked hard for there food and supplies.

Fun Facts The Rhode Island colony is located beside the Connecticut colony and the Massachusetts Bay colony. Major Industries were Agriculture, Fishing, Ship building and more.
