ABOUT THE SCHOOL CU’s first home (Trinity church schoolhouse) was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the U.S. The college reopened as Columbia in 1784 after being shut down during the American Revolution.

LOCATION This urban private university is located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, one of the boroughs of New York City.

SIZE In total, Columbia University’s campuses occupy 299 acres.

BEST KNOWN FOR… CU is known for its engineering school, business school, and also for being a Private Ivy League school. Columbia University is ranked #15 in Best Engineering Schools by U.S. News 2014.
