Sports injuries and treatment More than ten million sports injuries occur each year Most sports injuries are due to either traumatic injury (an external blow) or overuse of muscles or joints Unless you have been trained in first aid, you should never try to treat a casualty Many sports injuries can be prevented by: –Proper conditioning and training –Wearing appropriate protective gear –Using the correct equipment

Types of sports injury Types of sports injury include: –Wounds –Fractures –Joint/muscle injuries –Unconsciousness –Shock –Heat exhaustion and heat-stroke You must learn how each injury occurs and how it should be treated

Wounds A wound is any break in the skin or body surface Cuts can be caused by sharp edges such as boot studs, jewellery or stones When the skin is cut, the blood vessels at the wound edges are cut straight across, so blood loss is very likely Grazes are wounds in which the top layers of skin are scraped off, leaving a raw, tender area Grazes are commonly caused by a sliding fall (eg a trip on a running track), a friction burn (eg hands sliding along a rope) or a grass burn (eg a sliding tackle on dry grass)
