Top Ten Test-Taking Tips What do these pictures mean? Let’s find out…

 Highlight, underline, or circle the details in the questions.  This will help you focus on exactly what the question is asking you to do. 1. “Jail” the Detail Mr. Detail

2. Be Slick and Predict After reading the first part of a selected response question, predict what the answer will be before you read the choices. I think the answer is…

3. Slash the Trash Read ALL of the answer choices! Eliminate the “trash” – choices you know are not the correct answer If you can eliminate two wrong answers, your chance of choosing the correct answer is greater

4. Plug it in, Plug it in Once you have chosen your answer, plug it into the question or problem to be sure that it makes sense! This strategy works well with math problems and vocabulary questions

5. Be Smart with Charts Charts provide information that you can use to answer questions! Analyze ALL information provided by charts, maps, and graphs before answering the questions!

6. Read to Succeed If the directions tell you to read, then READ!! Pay close attention to power verbs in the directions (explain, evaluate, etc)

7. Be a Whiz with the Grid Beware! If the answer is not bubbled in exactly right…YIKES! It will be wrong! Fill in bubbles fully and erase stray marks

8. Show What You Know Don’t leave a question unanswered. You will not have ANY chance of getting it right. Use process of elimination or write what you know to get partial credit

9. Check It Out When you have completed the test, go back and check your work. Answer any questions you skipped and proofread your answers to correct any errors

10. Attitude is Everything Use the power of positive thinking "It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect it’s successful outcome.” –William James

Summary/Review Which of these tips will you try on your next test?
