8 Sep 2011 From Marrakech to Busan James Whitworth CCSA meeting, 7 – 9 September 2011

8 Sep 2011From Marrakech to Busan MAPS: job done? YES!!! but …. Strategic planning: good take-up of concept, but mixed results in implementation, “misalignment” between donor actions and NSDS census round: impressive results, but complementary actions needed. Increased funding: yes, but too “fragmented” and “concentrated”. IHSN / ADP: good progress, but are we making full use of existing data? Improvements in MDG monitoring: more “2 data points” instances, but are MDGs relevant in countries? Accountability of international system: Principles for IOs, but is more needed (e.g. co-ordination)?

8 Sep 2011From Marrakech to Busan What’s new? Financial crisis: mixed signals on funding levels, but increased pressure to demonstrate success. Partnership, more South – South co-operation: changing relationships, emerging countries becoming leaders amongst their peers (e.g. South Africa, Brazil). Global programmes: some well integrated into MAPS philosophy, others not. World-wide development indicators: do not fulfil country needs; move towards country specific indicators.

8 Sep 2011From Marrakech to Busan Busan actions – what can CCSA do? 1.Strategic Governance; alignment of actions to NSDS 2.Global Summits to recognise need for SCD Define indicators; promote global programmes. 3.Improve public access Dissemination best practices; GIS. 4.Increase us of statistics in policy making: Make indicators more relevant for countries. 5.Improve accessibility of IOs’ statistics & research Adherence to standards; Promotion of common tools. 6.Financing Pooling resources, lead agencies, local co-ordination.
