ENERGY TEST REVIEW

What are the 5 properties of energy? QUESTION 1

Answer 1 1) Energy can be transformed 2) Energy can transfer 3) Energy can come in many forms 4) Energy comes from the sun 5) Energy can be stored

QUESTION 2  Give an example of energy being transformed.

Answer 2  Electrical energy enters a light. The electrical energy is transformed into light and thermal energy. Electrical energy light energy thermal energy

QUESTION 3  Give an example of an energy transfer.

ANSWER 3  Antonia is running. She has mechanical energy. She pushes Cristobal. Cristobal receives the mechanical energy and falls.  The mechanical energy transfers from Antonia to Cristobal, but the energy type stays the same.

QUESTION 4  Give an example of the property “Energy can come in many types”

ANSWER 4  Energy can be in the following types: -solar -electrical -chemical -mechanical -thermal -light

QUESTION 5  Give an example of energy being stored.

ANSWER 5  When energy is not being used, it is stored. It can be used later.  For example, a bottle of soda has chemical energy. If no one drinks it, the energy is stored in the bottle.  When a person drinks the soda, the energy will not be stored, it will be used.

QUESTION 6  Which property does this picture represent?  Chemical energy from gasoline changes into thermal and mechanical energy when the car is used.

ANSWER 6  Energy can be transformed (it changes from chemical -> mechanical/thermal)

QUESTION 7  Which property does this picture represent?  The boy kicks his foot at the ball and the ball moves forward.

ANSWER 7  Energy can be transferred. (The boy’s foot has mechanical energy and gives mechanical energy to the ball)

QUESTION 8  Complete the energy transformations that occur: ItemUses this type of energy… …and changes into this type of energy Fire stove Tractor Soccer player

ANSWER 8 ItemUses this type of energy… …and changes into these type of energy Fire stove Chemical EnergyHeat energy, light energy TractorChemical Energy Mechanical energy Heat energy Sound energy Soccer playerChemical EnergyMechanical energy Thermal energy

QUESTION 9  What is the difference between an energy transformation and an energy transfer?

ANSWER 9  A transfer is when energy moves from one object to another without changing forms.  A transformation is when energy changes its form

QUESTION 10  Explain the Law of Conservation of Energy.

ANSWER 10  Energy cannot be created or destroyed.

QUESTION 11  Use the picture to explain the Law of Conservation of Energy. 100% Chemical Energy 60% Thermal energy 20% Sound energy 20% Mechanical energy

ANSWER 11  100% of the energy that enters the tractor is chemical. 100% of the energy is used and transformed.  However, some of the energy is transformed into unnecessary forms, such as thermal energy. We say this energy is “lost” because it does not help the tractor move.  Some energy will always be lost.

QUESTION 12  What is energy?

ANSWER 12  Energy is the ability to work and make change.

Question 13  How do YOU receive energy from the sun?

ANSWER 13  The sun gives solar energy to plants.  Plants transform this energy into chemical energy.  Animals eat plants  Humans eat animals

QUESTION 14  Explain each part of this process as an energy transfer or transformation.

ANSWER 14 Solar to chemicalchemical to chemical chemical to mechanical (transformation) (transfer) (transformation)
