Presentation transcript:

Energy Transformations and Conservation It’s the Law!

In science we sometimes talk about various LAWS. A scientific law is a statement that explains what we observe in nature and which has never been found to be wrong by any one, in any place, at any time.

The Law of the Conservation of Energy There is a law about energy which states: “Energy can’t be created or destroyed by ordinary physical means.” This is known as the Law of the Conservation of Energy.

Energy Transformations But energy CAN change from one type to another. The snowboarder’s gravitational potential energy can be changed into kinetic energy.

And the kinetic energy of rushing water can be turned into electrical energy.

Electric energy can be converted into heat energy.

And heat can create light!

But no matter how many different ways energy changes forms, the total amount of energy present remains the same. That’s what the Law of the Conservation of Energy states.
