SBC Pastor Views on Having an African American President of the Southern Baptist Convention

2 Methodology  The mail and on-line survey of SBC pastors was conducted from April 1 - May 11, 2012  The mailing list was randomly drawn from a stratified list of all SBC churches.  Surveys were mailed to the senior pastor with the option of completing on-line  Responses were weighted to reflect the geographic distribution and worship attendance of SBC churches

3 Methodology Continued  The completed sample is 1,066 surveys  The sample provides 95% confidence that the sampling error does not exceed +3.0%  Margins of error are higher in sub-groups

Survey Responses

5 Six in seven pastors with an opinion agree that it would be good to have an African American as president of the SBC. 7 “Without regard to any individual, I think it would be a good thing to have an African American as president of the Southern Baptist Convention.” continued Pastors of churches with 0-49 attendance are the least likely to ‘Somewhat Agree’ (19%) Pastors of churches with 0-49 attendance are the least likely to agree (51%) with pastors of churches with attendance of (59%) the next least likely.

8 “Without regard to any individual, I think it would be a good thing to have an African American as president of the Southern Baptist Convention.” continued Pastors age are the most likely to agree (75%) and “Strongly Agree” (54%). They are also the least likely to select “Don’t Know” (18%). There are no patterns of differences based on region of the country.
