Who? Who settled there? English colonists, looking for economic opportunity Who were the leaders? House of Burgesses (legislative body), royal governor, and the king Who were their neighbors? The Powhatan

What? What type of colony was Jamestown at first? A charter or proprietary colony What type of colony did it become? A royal colony (the king took away the Virginia Company’s charter)

When? When did settlers arrive? 1607 When was “starving time”? 1609-1610 Side Note: What was “starving time”?

Why? Why did settlers come to Jamestown? They were looking for gold (economic opportunity) Why did people support them? They wanted a profit (the investors in the Virginia Company) Why did Jamestown almost fail? The first settlers were not prepared for not finding gold, they had no way to support themselves
