Surinder Singh Kalsi Vice-Chairman, NEL LPC Member, Strategy Sub-committee STAYING THE SAME IS NOT AN OPTION

Pharmacy and others must take advantage of important opportunities, including:  Innovative new treatments and technology  Putting people in control of their own health and care  Integrating more heath and care services  Having greater emphasis on keeping healthy. 2 Staying the Same is Not an Option

 a £30bn efficiency challenge by 2020/21  The challenge would be greater if the economy deteriorates  The UK performs poorly on several of the most important health problems compared to peers  We spend a small amount of money on prevention  We don’t do enough to tackle the underlying risk factors that are associated with premature death and chronic disability. 3 Staying the Same is Not an Option

 The NHS is going to be reformed in a very significant way.  Pharmacy will not escape changes  Can people ever remember a consultation about community pharmacy before? 4 Staying the Same is Not an Option

The NHS has stated six outcomes they want for now and in the future:  Better Clinical Outcomes for Patients: quality improvement, integration, selfcare and patient involvement. More IT.  NHS Services 7 Days a Week: services available 24/7 from GPs and pharmacies  Transparency and Participation: Friends and Family Test and patients would be driving decisions about which services they want.  Putting Patients and Citizens First: No decision about me without me. This means working differently with patients.  Transformative Ideas: new ideas to save money, improve quality and involve patients  Financial Control: need to save £30 billion by Staying the Same is Not an Option

Because, this time pharmacy is targeted for change by the government and the change is going to be at:  a fundamental level and  involves a multiple-level change which includes  changes to practice,  IT,  staff,  education,  premises,  public involvement,  integrated working and, of course,  remuneration. 6 Staying the Same is Not an Option

 So far your LPC is the only LPC, NOT just in London but in the country, to organise such an event despite the NHS and PSNC urging LPCs to do so.  Thanks to all our  Speakers  Sponsors and  You 7 Staying the Same is Not an Option
