PSYCHOLOGY Target 1: Students will be able to describe some important milestones in psychology’s early development

TAKES NOTES ANYWAY YOU WANT!

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. “Psychology” has its roots in the Greek words of “psyche,” or mind, and “-ology,” or a field of study.” “Psychology has a long past but only a short history.”  Hermann Ebbinghaus

SO HOW DID THIS START? o Well we could go way back in time, but lets start with John Locke!  He believed in the idea of tabula rasa o The idea of empiricism is born! o Look in the blue box on your desk and answer one of the critical thinking questions in your notes!

THE BIRTH OF PSYCHOLOGY RESTS ON GUYS DROPPING BALLS AND TIMING PEOPLES REACTIONS

PSYCHOLOGY IS BORN! o Of course psychology is immediately controversial o Psych is broken into different branches: o Early branches: o Structuralism o Functionalism o Later branch: o Behaviorism

STRUCTURALISM: THINKING ON THE MINDS STRUCTURE o Mainly devoted to uncovering the basic structures that make up mind and thought-looking for the elements of conscious experience. o Structuralism relies on introspection, or the process of reporting one’s own conscious mental experiences. o Answer one of the critical thinking questions in your box now!

FUNCTIONALISM: THINKING ABOUT THE MINDS FUNCTIONS o The focus here is on how people adapt to their environments. o Psychology should explain how people adapted- or failed to adapt-to everyday life outside the laboratory. o Answer one of the critical thinking questions in your box now!

BEHAVIORISM: THINKING ABOUT OBSERVABLE BEHAVIOR o Late to the game… sprung up in the 1920s o Psychology should be observable and without mental processes. o Most people still agree that psychology should be observable, but disagree about the mental processes part.
