Foundation Phonics Meeting November 2013

What is ? oA scheme the school adopted last academic year. oVery structured and fast paced; rapid teaching and learning of sounds and blending. oAll children involved, every session. oTaught throughout Foundation and Key Stage One (until the age of 7). oA rapid Learn to read programme so children… oRead to learn for the rest of their lives

Sounds oAll words are made up of sounds. oThese are called phonemes. oIn English there are 44. oWe use ‘Fred Talk’ to help the children to hear each sound within a word.

Graphemes oA grapheme is a sound written down. oEnglish is a very complex code – there are more than 150! oMore than one way to spell each sound. oFor example: a_e in came, ay in play, ai in rain, ey in they.

Children learn a simple code first Set 1 Set 2 flmnrsvzshthng nk bcdghjpqutwxych k aeiouayeeighow oo arorairirouoy Set 1 sounds Set 2 sounds Consonants: stretchy Vowels: stretchy Consonants: bouncy Vowels: bouncy

If English had a simple code… oplay - mayk trayn cafay strayt wayt make train café straight wait ogreen - dreem kee hee happee dream key he happy olight - kight fligh Igh igh tigh kite fly I eye tie oblow - smowk flowt gow mowst smoke float go most omoon -broot bloo groo brute blue grew spelling and reading would be much easier!

Pronunication oIt’s really important to say the sounds and not the names of the letters at this stage. oTry not to add ‘uh’ onto the end of sounds. oPronunciation guide video. ohttps://global.oup.com/education/conte nt/primary/teaching- support/pages/rwi/?region=internationa l# nt/primary/teaching- support/pages/rwi/?region=internationa l# oProbably very different from how you were taught at school.

Fred oFred helps children learn to read. oFred can only talk in sounds... o(Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat). oWe call this Fred Talk. oIf your child can understand Fred talk they can blend orally. oBlending is needed for reading.

Fred oFred helps children learn to spell too! oChildren convert words into sounds. This is called segmenting. oThey press the sounds on to their fingers... oWe call this Fred Fingers.

How can you help your child? 11/30/2015 oBy using the 44 pure sounds. oBy using the Speed Sound cards with your child. oBy knowing how to blend using Fred Talk for reading. m_a_t > mat oBy knowing how to use Fred Fingers for spelling.

How can you help your child? By having fun with Fred Talk at home! o“What a tidy r-oo-m!” o“Where’s your c-oa-t?” o“Time for b-e-d!”  back, head, tum, leg, hand, foot, knee  coat, hat, scarf, zip, sock, glove  run, walk, skip, hop, fast, slow, stop, shop  red, blue, green, black,  knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, pan  bread, cheese, meat, soup, jam, cake

How can you help your child? By showing them how to write the grapheme correctly which matches the phoneme. Use the rhymes to help.

And… oBy reading your child lots of lovely stories and asking lots of questions! oUse these prompts to help you: What is that character thinking? What is the character saying? What do you think that character is feeling now? What is happening? What do you think happens next?

A typical Phonics session mins daily oRecap on sounds already taught oTeach a new sound/recap a sound children are finding more difficult to remember oLetter formation, air writing oFred talk oAssisted/independent blending oMake words using magnetic tiles with their partner oRead words – real and nonsense against the sand timer oLater in the day they practise handwriting on paper OR oComplete a reading activity. Children work in small groups of no more than 6 children of a similar ability.

A typical Phonics session – video clips ohttp:// support/42/index.htmlhttp:// support/42/index.html support/45/index.htmlhttp:// support/45/index.html

Once children know all Set 1 sounds oWe move on to ‘independent blending.’ oTeacher says a word e.g. tin and the children use ‘Fred Fingers’ to say each sound in the word. oThey then make the word, finding the graphemes themselves rather than using the teacher’s model.
