How does 3 rd Grade compare to 2 nd ? Note taking from the board/ projector. Self monitoring/ completing assignments in a timely manner. Keeping books, folders, and notebooks organized. Standardized tests will NOT be read aloud/ bubble sheets used to answer. Using higher order thinking skills. RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY!

Math Math Through the year we will be learning multiplication, division, algebraic equations, fractions, elapsed time, metric and customary units of measurement, and geometry. The children will be involved in learning activities which deal with problem solving. Our math program will enable children to become complex thinkers who are comfortable with all areas of mathematics. It is expected that students coming into third grade know their basic addition and subtraction facts by memory (without using fingers).

Readers’ Workshop In addition to covering numerous grammar and usage skills, we will teach reading fluency and comprehension through Readers’ Workshop and Guided Reading. There will be a strong focus on nonfiction literature as we incorporate many Social Studies and Science topics into our whole and small group reading lessons. A brief mini lesson will be followed by independent reading, guided reading, and responding to reading. Students will also have the opportunity to work with poetry and drama. Student anthologies will be used as supplemental texts as needed.

Writers’ Workshop Throughout the week the children participate in Writer’s Workshop. This is a time when the children are involved in writing stories on topics of their choice and assigned topics. We will learn how to write personal narratives, persuasive writing pieces, informational pieces, as well as responding to literature. Writing skills that are taught through mini lessons are applied and discussed daily. Students will go through the writing process while creating their writing pieces two to three times per quarter.

Handwriting Our goal in teaching handwriting is legibility. No student texts are available. We will study lowercase cursive writing during the first semester and uppercase letters during the second semester. PLEASE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO USE THEIR BEST HANDWRITING AND ONLY CAPITALIZE APPROPRIATE LETTERS. Spelling Third grade will be focusing on the Greek and Latin word roots, as well as a variety of spelling patterns. There is no student textbook for Word Study, the completion of assigned homework and at home spelling review of no excuse words and root words are recommended.

. Social Studies: Your child will be learning about our Government and its roots, as well as several American Heroes that helped shape our nation into the country it is today. These heroes include Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franklin Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Cesar Chavez. We will use the Georgia Weekly Magazines for these concepts. We will also focus on a variety of map skills throughout the year. Science: Third grade topics for Science come from Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science. We will study the regions of Georgia and their inhabitants, how our world changes through heat and erosion, and what makes up our world, such as rocks and soil (We're hoping to have a few hands on activities demonstrated by professional geologists).

I am looking forward to an awesome year!
