IMU: Background I Instrumentation and Measurement Society runs 'International Measurement University' (IMU) Originated from an Italian experience in managing a 1 week long 3-year program doctoral school named after an Italian scientist "Italo Gorini" (this year run in Perugia) IMU: 3 year rotation of topics – Mon-Fri lessons (1 week) 2 editions have taken place in Sardagna – Trento – Italy Coorganizers: Alessandro Ferrero – I&M President (Polytechnic of Milan), Dario Petri (Univ. Of Trento) Target audience: Ph.D. Candidates working in I&M and similar areas, entry level engineers needing background in I&M

IMU: Background II Tuition (room and board + lessons): 1100 USD Companion event 'STREAM' following IMU: workshop for students to present their research activity w/ proceedings publication IEEE credits (3 CEUs) after final test

IMU: outcomes I edition: 23 attendees (mostly international students, few Italians) II edition (July 20-24, 2009): 16 attendees (about 10 returning students) – STREAM workshop cancelled High level of satisfaction (questionnaire based)

SOSU: plan Is this initiative economically sustainable? Realization time: about 1 year or even less Can exploit (partially) work done for IMU

SOSU: budget I Major costs 'Conference catalyst' about 5000 USD (Web site + administrative tasks) Ads in magazine/journal may be "low" cost or even free Lecturers travel expenses (1/2 each day per 5 days): can be (partially) modulated according to attendance Number of attendees to break USD/registration: about 25 No SYSC costs considered yet
