KE = m x v2/2 or 1/2mv2 GPE = m x 9.8 x h Kinetic Energy – energy due to the fact that matter is in Potential Energy – stored energy due to it’s position or shape http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=127812&title=Story_of_Kinetic_and_Potential_Energy KE = m x v2/2 or 1/2mv2 GPE = m x 9.8 x h m=mass (weight) v=velocity (speed) h=height above ground

Elastic Potential Energy Energy that is stored due to being stretched or compressed is called elastic potential energy.

Use the illustration below to answer the questions. Bellwork: Use the illustration below to answer the questions. x x x x x x 1. ___ Which letter in the diagram represents the place where the cars on the roller coaster would have the most potential energy?  2. ___ Which letter represents the place where the cars would have the least kinetic energy? 3. ___ Where in the diagram would the cars be moving with the greatest speed? 1. ___ Which letter in the diagram represents the place where the cars on the roller coaster would have the most potential energy?  2. ___ Which letter represents the place where the cars would have the least kinetic energy? 3. ___ Where in the diagram would the cars be moving with the greatest speed?

Potential energy decreases as Kinetic energy increases Kinetic energy slows as Potential energy gains Kinetic energy Maximum as it leaves hand.

M Mechanical (Kinetic & Potential) Seven forms of Energy: M Mechanical (Kinetic & Potential) R Radiant (Solar, Light-(electromagnetic)) S Sound C Chemical H Heat (Thermal) E Electrical N Nuclear (Fission (bonds break/nonsolar) & Fusion (bonds fuse/solar)

Examples of Mechanical Energy

What is Electromagnetic Energy? Light energy Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands

What is Electrical Energy? Energy caused by the movement of electrons Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

What is Chemical Energy? Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.

Examples of Chemical Energy

What is Thermal Energy? Heat energy The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

Heat vs Temperature Heat and temperature are related to each other, but are different concepts. Heat is the total energy of molecular motion in a substance while temperature is a measure of the average energy of molecular motion in a substance. Heat energy depends on the speed of the particles, the number of particles (the size or mass), and the type of particles in an object. Temperature does not depend on the size or type of object. For example, the temperature of a small cup of water might be the same as the temperature of a large tub of water, but the tub of water has more heat because it has more water and thus more total thermal energy.

If we take two objects which have the same temperature and bring them into contact, there will be no overall transfer of energy between them because the average energies of the particles in each object are the same. But if the temperature of one object is higher than that of the other object, there will be a transfer of energy from the hotter to the colder object until both objects reach the same temperature. Temperature is NOT energy, but a measure of it. Heat is energy.

The transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another through direct contact. The transfer of energy by the movement of a liquid or a gas. A transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves, such as visible light or infrared waves.
