So what is an Academy anyway? Academies are small learning communities within a school that draw on the interests of students in learning about a particular field of study. Academies help prepare students for their post-secondary education and careers through academic learning and hands-on work experiences within a theme-based, contextualized curriculum. Through participating in Academies, students are exposed to broad career opportunities and experiences in the work force that enable them to make sound choices for their academic and professional careers. What is the difference between an Academy and a Strand?  Strands are like Majors that exist in under each Academy. Academies are like departments that contain a number of strands related to different areas of study.  Students choose a strand based on their career interests.  For example, a student who was interested in studying Law would choose the Legal strand under the International Business & Finance Academy. Things to Consider When Choosing an Academy  Students must complete a minimum four year sequence in at least one strand in order to be considered for an Academy Diploma.  Students are not allowed to change their Academies / Strand once they have selected their first Academy class.  Students may complete more than one strand from the same or different Academy(s) if their schedules permit and they remain in good academic standing.

Banking Finance/Accounting Operations   Accounting Applications 1 This course emphasizes double-entry accounting; methods and principles of recording business transactions; the preparation of various documents used in recording income, expenses, acquisition of assets, incurrence of liabilities, and changes in equity; and the preparation of financial statements. The use of computers is required.   Accounting Applications 2 This course is designed to continue the study of accounting principles. The content includes voucher systems, cash receipts, petty cash, payroll records and internal control systems. The use of computers is required.   Accounting Applications 3 Honors This course continues the study of accounting principles and applies those principles to various entities. The content includes methods for determining the cost of merchandise inventory, general ledger account analysis, and the aging process. The use of computers is required. Customer Assistance technology/Insurance & Real Estate Services   Computing for College and Careers   Customer Assistance 1   This course is designed to build upon the experiences and content of the business technology education core (Business Systems and Technology 1 and 2) so that a fundamental core of knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for today's business environment is established.   Customer Assistance 2   This course is designed to build upon experiences and content of Customer Assistance 1. Emphasis is placed on developing supervisory skills for customer care specialist positions.   Insurance and Real Estate Services   The Insurance strand is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and application of insurance product and service technology The Real Estate strand is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge of the real estate market and the importance of self-marketing. Entrepreneurship Business Supervision & Management   Computing for College and Careers   Business and Entrepreneurship Principles Honors This course is designed to provide an introduction to business organization, management, and entrepreneurial principles.   Legal Aspects of Business Honors This course is designed to provide an introduction to the legal aspects of business. Topics include business law concepts, forms of business ownership, insurance awareness governmental regulations, management functions, human resources management issues, and career development. The use of computers is an integral part of this program.   Business Supervision This course continues the study of business supervisory functions. Students are required to perform higher level thinking and decision making and the use technology as a resource to efficiently perform communications activities. The use of computers is required. Legal   Computing for College and Careers   Business and Entrepreneurship Principles Honors This course is designed to provide an introduction to business organization, management, and entrepreneurial principles. Topics include communication skills, various forms of business ownership and organizational structures, supervisor/management skills, leadership skills, human resources management activities, business ethics, and cultural diversity.   Legal Aspects of Business Honors This course is designed to provide an introduction to the legal aspects of business. Topics include business law concepts, forms of business ownership, insurance awareness governmental regulations, management functions, human resources management issues, and career development. Students will identify the need for law and the basis for our legal systems. Comprehensive Law Studies This course provides an in-depth approach to the workings of our criminal and civil justice systems. Students apply conceptual learnings to simulated and real life problems and case studies.  Forensic Science The purpose of this course is to provide exploratory experiences and laboratory and real life applications in the biological sciences.
