REPORTED QUESTIONS

You will see six different questions. Mark will dictate the first part of a sentence that reports these questions. Write what he says and complete the sentence.

“How much do you earn?”

“Where did you buy your watch?”

“How many kilos have you lost?”

“When are you coming to stay with me?”

“Why won’t you marry me?”

“Who on earth gave you my address?”

Compare your sentences with the following:

He wanted to know how much I earn.

She asked (me) where I (had) bought my watch.

The doctor asked (me) how many kilos I had lost.

My aunt wanted to know when I was going to stay with her.

Her boyfriend wanted to know why she wouldn’t marry him.

I (angrily) asked him who gave him my address. Feeling shocked, I asked him who gave him my address.

Now try to report the following questions with the sentence beginnings that Mark dictates.

a)Have you got change for a £5 note? b)Have you seen Tim today? c)Will you be at home this weekend? d)Does your wife speak any Portuguese? e)Did you telephone me last night? f)Can you lend me £1 till tomorrow?

a)The man asked me if I had change for a £5 note. b)They wanted to know whether I had seen Tim that day. c)I asked if she would be at home that weekend. d)At the interview they asked whether or not my wife speaks any Portuguese. e)She wanted to know if I had telephoned her the previous night. f)My friend asked whether I could you lend her £1 till the next day.

Complete the following statements so that they are true: I would like to know… I would like to ask ______ if… I don’t know whether or not… Now try to find out the answers to these questions WITHOUT leaving the room.

Create questions from the following prompts. You will use the questions as a quiz for your classmates, so please make them interesting or difficult (or both): Can you tell me… Do you know if… I wonder if you could tell me… Do you happen to know…
