Classroom Design

Glass half empty or half full? We can look at these rooms and see what works well. –Try to envision someone using the room –Solicit input from all available sources –Do not trivialize the work that went into making the room

Issue 1: Consistent Interface Observations It can be confusing when an instructor goes from one classroom to another. Similar rooms have different styles of interface Some rooms use buttons in different ways on the same screen

Projector is off vs. Turn projector off

Consistent Interface Suggested Standard All rooms will have a similar layout (touch and feel). Buttons will be in same order and work the same way (e.g., PC, MAC, Laptop) (e.g., turning system on and off) Agree to four categories of rooms based on functionality needed

Consistent Interface Suggestion: Four Categories Remote: use remote to control projector Basic: The bare bones rooms need only buttons {e.g. DB12} Intermediate: Need more functions (e.g., overflow, VTC) {e.g. TPS-4} Advanced: Need even more functions (e.g., recording, multiple images) or are larger rooms {e.g. TPS-12 or larger}

Chalk and Equipment Observation Observation: In some rooms equipment is too close to chalk boards so that monitors and keyboards get covered with chalk dust soon after being cleaned

Chalk and Equipment Suggested Standard: PC and other equipment will be away from chalk dust producing black boards Where necessary, barriers will be placed between black boards and equipment Where feasible, all equipment (e.g., PC, switch, DVD) will be enclosed inside a cart or other container

Chalk and Equipment Suggestion When rooms are designed see if we can place equipment or make some kind of barrier that will protect them from chalk dust Look at the old rooms that are problems to see if we can move equipment or make some kind of barrier (e.g., CLK, OLS)

Ventilation Observations Some racks do not provide adequate ventilation (e.g., CHM 402, THN 115) This can cause equipment to over heat and harmful to users This can cause equipment to fail sooner than it should Some users have complained about how hot it is around equipment (e.g., THN 223)

Ventilation Suggestions Some of the boxes around projectors and other equipment could provide better ventilation if solid wood was replaced with screening (e.g., THN) Some racks could provide better ventilation if there were more space or a larger fan (e.g., CHM 402) Some fans may need to be serviced

Easy access to filter and lamp Observations In some rooms it is necessary to remove projector in order to change lamp or clean filter This could be avoided by moving the mounting bracket or putting a hole in the wall
