PARENT MEETING CLASS OF 2015 January 29, 2015 Danny Coggin Richard Jackson Marian Dill

Our Purpose  At Walker Valley we believe that we are to work in cooperation with the student and the parent in order to form a partnership that will benefit each student.  Our goal is to see each student graduate from Walker Valley with a solid educational foundation under their feet.

Tennessee Honors Diploma How to Graduate with an Honors Diploma: Students who score at or above all of the subject area readiness benchmarks on the ACT (or equivalent score on the SAT) will graduate with honors. ACT College Readiness Benchmark Scores: English – 18 Mathematics – 22 Reading – 21 Science – 23 College Readiness Benchmark Scores for the ACT represent median test scores that are predictive of student success in relevant college courses. “Success” is defined as a 50 percent or higher probability of earning a B or higher in the corresponding college course or courses. A 3.0 or above qualifies for a Walker Valley Honors Diploma

Diploma of Distinction Graduating with Distinction Tennessee graduates who maintain a B average and complete an additional approved credential will graduate with distinction. Approved credentials include: Nationally recognized industry certification Tennessee Governor's School All State musical organization* National Merit finalist or semi-finalist A composite score of 31 or higher on the ACT A core of 3 or higher on two AP exams 12 or more hours of transcripted post-secondary credit

Circle of Champions Steps for applying: Students should apply to Circle of Champions EACH Year. Applications should be completed online (March 20 is the absolute deadline) high.com or thespill.org Students MUST turn in their Service Hour Forms to Guidance by March 20. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Credit Recovery Students need to complete Credit Recovery as soon as available please make sure your student has ALL Credit Recovery classes completed. We have 36 seniors who need to complete Credit Recovery Credit Recovery is available only in the core areas. Start date is to be announced. Credit Recovery meets Monday – Friday 7:40 – 8:10 Monday - Tuesday - Thursday After School 3:30 – 4:30 Monday/Tuesday/Thursday at 1:30 by signing up with Ms. Howard

What To Do  Your child should check with their counselor, Mr. Jackson, to check their credit situation.  They should check to see if there is an opportunity for Credit Recovery.  If this is not an option they should be checking for opportunities to make up the class.  Remember there are 28 credits required to graduate

It is not too late  Students must dig in and ask for help  Teachers are available for tutoring before school, after school and during club time.  It will take hard work on the part of the student in conjunction with asking for help from their teachers.  Parent Portal is available.  Call Patty Phillips

What is our purpose?  We want to give your child every opportunity to graduate.  We want to communicate with you on a regular basis.  Progress Reports go out every three weeks.  Please watch our website daily for announcements etc.

Now is the Time  Look at college choices based on what your child wishes to major in – look for the best program for them.  Look at information the college requires and when it is due so it will not slip up on you.  Be academically prepared.  Look at the future, check out the career your child is interested in and find out what it takes to for that to be a career choice.
