Teacher Support for Teaching Writing

Modeled Writing Teacher writes in front of the children and “thinks out loud” as the writing is formed The teacher does the writing The teacher provides the most support by doing both the thinking and the writing Can be whole or small group Based on teacher demonstration

Shared Writing Teacher & children create text, but teacher does the actual writing; children assist Teacher & children do thinking together Can be implemented in whole or small groups; with buddies or individuals Language Experience Approach & KWL charts

Interactive Writing Teacher & children use a “shared pen” to do the writing Conversation is focused on writing conventions Teacher & children share the responsibility for thinking and writing Whole & small group; buddies or individual Predictions, daily news, innovations, letters

Guided Writing Teacher presents a structured lesson about writing procedures, strategies, or skills, and supervises children as they write Teacher provides structure, children do the thinking and writing Small groups, buddies, individuals Collaborations, ABC books, formula poems
