Unit 1 Part 3 Segment Addition & Distance and Midpoint Formulas

Segment Addition Postulate Segment Addition Postulate : if the three points A,B, and C are collinear then AB+BC = AC A B C

Example  If AC = 60, find the value of X.  (2x – 8 ) + ( 3x –12) = 60  5x – 20 = 60   5x = 80  5 5  x = 16 A B C 2x - 8 3x - 12

Example  AC = 54, find AB and BC. A B C 5x + 6 5x - 2 (5x +6) + ( 5x - 2) = 54 10x + 4 = 54 10x = 50 X = 5 AB = 5(5)+6 AB=31 BC = 23

Congruent Symbol  Congruent : means the two geometric shapes are equal in size, shape, length, and degree.  AB = CD ~

The Distance Formula  The distance between two points is

Midpoint Formula
