Grasslands- Savannah plants By Carissa

Soil Roots, that can extend some 6 into the ground, and the soil together. The roots prevent the grasslands fine soil from eroding away in the wind and rain. dark soil called humus. This soil is essential for plants and grasses to grow in grasslands

Grass There are two different types of grasslands; tall-grass, which are humid and very wet, and short-grass, which are dry, with hotter summers and colder winters. The settlers found on their journey west of the grasslands. When they crossed the Mississippi River they came into some very tall grass, some as high as 11 feet, it rained and it was very humid.

isolated trees In grassland-savanna there all lots of isolated trees all around. All isolated Trees are in different sizes and shapes, so I can’t really say how tall or wide They get.

shrubs In grasslands (like I said before) there are lots of little shrubs all around. I Would say they grow to be 1 foot wide and 1-2 feet tall.

Asters Asters are perennial plants that grow from 2 to 6 feet tall. The leaves of the flower can be up to 4 inches long and 1 inch wide. The blooms are typically a bright purple color! The flowers typically bloom between August and October.

Wild indigo Wild indigo plant that usually blooms in warm weather. The plant stems are about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The flower blooms range in color from a light blue to a purple.

Coneflowers Coneflowers grow typically around 3 feet high. The plant is a color of reddish- purple blooms, sometimes pink or white. The middle of the bloom has a spiky appearance. Coneflower blooms between May and June.

Goldenrods Goldenrods are flowers that offer bright yellow flowers and have a flat top, The plant can grow to be a little over 3 feet tall. The flower normally blooms in autumn.

Sunflowers The Sunflower forms in dense groups in grasslands and typically spreads very quickly. Sunflower leaves are mainly at the bottom of the plant. The blossoms have yellow petals and brown centers. The height of the plant usually ranges between 1 and 5 feet and livestock and other animals eat it. The flower blooms in late summer.

Blazing Stars Blazing Stars are a tall, hardy plants that grows from a tuber. The leafy stems can grow up to around 5 feet tall. The bottom of the plant and the leaves usually have short and stiff hairs. The top part of the Blazing Star contains spikes of rose-purple, thistle-like flowers. The flowers usually bloom in late summer and autumn.
