What happened… The AMERICAN Revolution Spain gets Louisiana from France (1763) The United States declares its independence from England (1776) The US (with the help of Spain and France) wins the Revolutionary War (1783) AND all land west to the Mississippi River – except Florida Spain stopped building new missions since the French were no longer a threat on it’s eastern border (1790s) Now the two major powers in North America are the United States and Spain The AMERICAN Revolution Mississippi River American

The Louisiana Purchase Spain has to give Louisiana back to France (1800) In 1803, Thomas Jefferson (the US) buys Louisiana from Napoleon (France) for $15 million. (1803) The United States DOUBLES in size and now has control of the Mississippi River.
