Welcome to Unit 7-AB140 WELCOME. We are starting our 7 th week. I’m proud of all of you for the tenacity you are demonstrating. Are there any questions from Unit 6 you need clarification on before we begin with Unit 7? (All seminar’s are recorded.) Please summarize in your own words at least one thing you learned from Unit 6. Instructor overview and comments. 1

Effective Teams Unit 7 – AB140 AGENDA Reading: required reading is from Chapter 11 from the Bateman and Snell text. Reading: Web Resource Games and Activities #1 Discussion: review Table 11.1 (See next slide). Consider a position that you hold now (paid or unpaid) or one that you’ve held in the past. Which environment best describes your job (or class)? #2 Discussion: Take an assessment on team roles and discuss your results. Assignment: reading a scenario about Sandwich Blitz, Inc. and writing about how self-managed teams could be used at Sandwich Blitz. Seminar--we will discuss; why some groups fail, how teams contribute to an organization and various types of teams. Do alternative assignment if you do not attend Seminar. Review 2

The New Team Environment

Unit 7 Objectives (Outcomes) After completing this unit, you should be able to: Identify traditional vs. team environments. Describe how teams contribute to an organization’s effectiveness. Recall how an effective team is built. Course Outcomes practiced in this unit: AB140-3: Explain the steps to manage change 4

General Questions 5

Unit 6 Review (from discussion) Control Systems (Bureaucratic, Market and Clan). Is firing the manager/supervisor and the associate customer the way to go? Why or why not? 6

Comments about Raam Dev? Look for my mid-point comment in our Unit 7 discussion. If he had worked in a team, would he have had the same results? Why? 7

Team quotes… “The great inventor Edison did not create everything himself; he had a team of 14 assistants around him (Sloane, P., The Leader’s Guide to Lateral Thinking Skills, 2003, p. 99).” Steve Jobs states, “It was the team that created the Apple Macintosh (Sloane, P., The Leader’s Guide to Lateral Thinking Skills, 2003, p. 99).” (He wrote their signatures on the inside of the computer casing). 8

Define “Team.” 9

How do groups become teams? 10

Why do groups sometimes fail? 11

Barriers for team success Ineffective communication Lack of effective chartering, visioning, and goal setting Lack of clarity about roles Inability to keep morale and momentum high Decrease in productivity Lack of trust 12

Unit 7 Effective Teams As a manager, what is your role in increasing the likelihood that your team will be successful? 13

Unit 7 Effective Teams If you have ever led or been a participant in teams, you are likely aware that sometimes teams yield successful results and sometimes they do not. People in teams can trigger ideas' to others or build upon what has been said before (piggy-backing). In the modern workplace, there has been a trend toward conducting business with the use of teams. Today’s managers have the goal of ensuring that their work teams are successful. What are some tips for choosing a team? 14

Contribution of Teams… Benefiting the organization directly… A team of individuals addressing an issue can experience breakthroughs and develop fresh ideas that may not have been possible with a single individual. Teams can increase production, improve quality, and reduce costs. Teams can enhance speed and be powerful forces for innovation and change. The team can be a useful learning mechanism, thereby benefiting the members. Team members can give each other feedback; identify opportunities for growth and development; and train, coach, and mentor. Source: Bateman and Snell text; page

Teamwork and Brainstorming #1 I have a pressing challenge and I need your help to find a good solution (Arrange team #1). Every idea is welcomed from the team. No idea is silly. I want to hear creative solutions (not just ‘more of the same’). But, feel free to piggy-back on other peer’s ideas. I need 7 volunteers. I want to hear from ONLY the chosen team members during the following Seminar exercises. Everyone will get a “team” turn (if time allows). Team #1: Choose a random word, image or object. 16

Teamwork Make connections between the word “chosen” and the problem to be solved (Instructor will explain further). Problem: “How can we get everyone in class to exercise more?” 17

Great teamwork! Now those are good ideas! 18

Any Questions 19

Team #2 I need 7 volunteers… 20

Teamwork and Brainstorming #2 Remember--I want to hear from ONLY the chosen team members during this exercise. Brainstorm 10 alternative uses for a toothpick. 21

Great teamwork! Way to go! 22

Any Questions 23

Team #3 I need 8 volunteers (or the remaining students that did not get to participate in a team activity). 24

Teamwork and Brainstorming #3 In Unit 6 we read about “values” and “ethics.” In Unit 7 we will cover teamwork and conflict. The following team exercise employs decision making techniques using values, teamwork and conflict to guide your choices. 25

Lost in a Lifeboat You are aboard a cruise ship that is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. As dusk approaches, you hear the alert signal to abandon ship. Passengers pour onto the lifeboats. The remainder of the ship sinks. The surviving life boat has 10 people, but is equipped to transport six. There is only enough water for 6 people for three days. The consensus is to try to carry all 10. To plan ahead, the group decides to rank the persons from 1-10, with one being the most necessary person to stay and 10 being the first to go. As a team, rank the following persons…. Taken from: A workbook for interpersonal communication, (1983). 3 rd ed., Dubuque, Iowa, Kendal/Hunt Publishing. 26

Rank the persons 31 year old ex-con, armed robbery, male, unmarried, 2 children. 45 year old housewife, married, 2 children can’t swim. Pregnant lady, unmarried, age 27. Minister, age 25, single, male. Electrical Engineer, 40’s, female. Olympic Swimmer, 40’s, male. Doctor, female, married, with 3 children at home, age 35. Navy Captain, retired, age 70, male, divorced. Youngster, male, 7 years old, only child. Teenage girl,

Great teamwork! Now there’s some good thinking! 28

Any Questions 29

Conflict Conflict is sometimes viewed as something to be avoided. Yet conflict is all around us. There are many ways of dealing with conflict. Managing conflict requires that you—what? Identify ways to manage conflict... 30

Unit 7--Types of Teams Can you name some types of teams that are commonly present in the workplace? 31

Any Questions? 32 Seminar is coming to an end, soon. Let’s wrap-up the evening. We’re almost finished with our classes and can see the end in sight! Keep going…

Seminar Concluded Good night. Have a great week! My office hours are listed on our class syllabus. My AIM ID is: DrDenhard. THE END… 33
