Earn money for college  Taking the PSAT gives you the opportunity to qualify for several scholarships, most notably the National Merit Scholarship program.  The top-scoring 50,000 students receive letters of commendation.  15,000 are selected as finalists 8,400 receive National Merit scholarships of $2,500. 1,300 receive Special scholarships by corporations.

PSAT SCORING  For each correct answer, you receive 1 point.  For questions you omit, you receive no points.  For a wrong answer to a multiple-choice question, you lose ¼ of a point.  For a wrong answer to a math grin-in, you do not lose any points.

Kaplan’s top 3 PSAT strategies 1. Know when to guess  If you can eliminate one or more choices as wrong, you increase your chances of choosing the correct answer and earning one point. In this case, YOU SHOULD MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS!  If you can’t eliminate any choices, leave it blank and move on.

Kaplan’s top 3 PSAT strategies 3. Circle the questions you skip  The most common mistake on the PSAT is to fill the right answers into all the wrong spots.  Circling questions you skip prevents you from making costly mistakes on the answer sheet, especially when you only have a limited time.

Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability (10-15%) For the grid-in questions, no answer choices are given. You write your answer in the grids. Bring a scientific or graphing calculator. You do not have to memorize math formulas as they are listed in the math sections.
