Hide and Surveillance Sites
Hide and Surveillance Sites TLO Action: Select, construct and occupy a hide and surveillance site. Condition: Given a RS team, construction equipment, and an objective area to work in. Standard: Select, construct and occupy a fully operational hide and surveillance site IAW FM7-93.
Risk Assessment Level: Safety Requirements: Field portion: All students will carry a minimum of 4 qts of water. Additional 5 gallon cans will be on site. PI will have a CLS bag any injuries will be reported to the PI for immediate treatment. Classroom: In case of fire go out either door and meet at the student barracks. Risk Assessment Level: Classroom (Low) PE (Medium based on the heat)
Environmental Considerations Don’t handle snakes or insects. Remain aware of the heat and drink water regularly. Avoid poison ivy and poison oak in the area.
Evaluation Your evaluation for this class as well as all operational technique classes will come during the FTX portion of RSLC. Your ability to properly select, construct, and occupy a hide and surveillance site will determine if your patrol is a GO or a NO GO.
Lead In Up to this portion of the course you have learned communications and vehicle recognition. During the next week you will learn operational techniques that you can base your team SOPs. During the this block of instruction you will learn how to construct, camouflage and occupy a hide and surveillance site.
Hide and Surveillance Site ELO A Action: Plan for a suitable hide site. Condition: Given a RSLC team, during planning. Standard: Selection must be IAW FM 7-93 to receive a GO.
Hide and Surveillance Sites Site selection begins with a thorough reconnaissance Map Reconnaissance Most common Least preferred
Hide and Surveillance Sites Satellite Imagery Preferred technique(LOS,etc.) Difficult to obtain Aerial Photographs Extremely efficient and accessible Not always feasible
Hide and Surveillance Sites Modified combined obstacle overlay(MCOO) Line of sight survey Hydrology charts
Considerations Security of the site (300m from roads and trails) Distance from the surveillance to the hide (700m)
Considerations Does the hide facilitate good communication (FM and HF) Safe egress route Water Resupply
Hide and Surveillance Sites Other information that may be available Previous patrol logs Updated weather reports
Site selection Primary and alternate sites must be planned for. Sites are tentative until leader’s recon is completed.
Hide Site ELO B Action: Establish a hide site. Condition: Given a RSLC team, a field environment and proper construction equipment. Standard: Establish a hide site IAW FM 7- 93 to receive a GO.
Hide Site Reconnaissance must be done Fish hook Dog leg Recon by force is not a preferred technique and will not be utilized.
Hide Site Objective Rally Point In a heavily vegetated area with good camouflage and concealment. Large enough for the entire team. Have at least one egress route Undetectable as well as easily defendable. Located away from LOC’s, inhabited areas and natural lines of drift.
Hide Site Actions at Objective Rally Point SLLS Cross load equipment Commo checks (FM and HF) Leader’s recon
Hide Site Construction Equipment E-tool / D-handled shovel Folding saw Pruning shears / tin snips Poncho / plastic sheeting Tent pegs / metal stakes PVC material Chicken wire Bungee cords / 550 cord
Hide Site Construction Equipment cont. Prefabricated material (yetti blanket) Waterproof bag Mosquito bar / sniper veil / panty hose Burlap sandbags Booties Wrap around trees while digging Thermal barrier
Hide Site Site Construction conducted in four phases 1. Clear away all vegetation 2. Digging - disposal (holes, indentations, streams, creeks rivers) - dispersion (around the site)
Hide Site 3. Overhead cover (natural or man made to include waterproofing) Camouflage (Not visible from 10m in all directions)
Hide Site Inspection Does the site blend? Does it look out of place? Is it visible from 10m? Path of least resistance over the site? Claymores adjusted? Rucks arranged to facilitate breakout? BLISS
Hide Site Team must reinforce plans for −Security −Alert −Evacuation −Distance and direction to RV/procedures −Rest −Chow −FM and HF windows and no commo procedures.
Hide Site Team must reinforce plans for cont. −Maintenance Equipment Weapons −Personal hygiene −Stand to procedures −PT (isometric exercises)
Hide Site Actions after “eyes off” or COM −Establish security −Remove all equipment −Remove the overhead cover −Fill in the site (natural materials only) −Compact the soil −Use top layer for camouflage −Take down commo −Recover claymores −Sterilize and counter track
Hide Site Advantages of a subsurface site −Provides protection from small arms −Excellent cover and concealment −Reduces the risk of compromise −Protection from the elements
Hide Site Disadvantages are −Time and energy used to construct −Noise −Material and equipment needed
Surveillance Site ELO C Action: Select, construct and occupy a Condition: Given an objective, RSLC team and properly selected construction tools. Standard: Select, construct and occupy a surveillance site IAW FM 7-93 to receive a GO.
Surveillance Site Prior to departing the hide / ORP −Commo check with all FM radios −5 point contingency plan briefed −Cross / download equipment −Confirm location
Surveillance Site Enroute to OBJ: −Keep rate of movement slow −Commo checks done frequently −Scan with NVG’s −Keep formation tight −Utilize shadows and low ground −Conduct periodic SLLS −Controlled navigation and pace count
Surveillance Site Team leader may take all personnel or conduct recon by himself. Once the objective is pinpointed, the surveillance sites need to be located. Note: TL will pinpoint the objective.
Site Selection Considerations Can objective be seen, reported on?(ground) Has standoff been maximized? Ample time for an effective site to be built?
Site Selection Considerations Is there a cover and concealed egress? Is the area prone to flooding? Objects that would attract attention? Trails nearby?
Surface Sites Used only when the site leader feels that a subsurface site would compromise the mission. Examples: Hasty surface Semi subsurface Ghillie suits
Surface Sites Advantages: −Takes little time and energy to construct. −Few supplies are needed. −Less soil displacement. −Constructed and broken down easily.
Surface Sites Disadvantages: −Risk of compromise is greater. −Little or no protection from small arms. −Easily detectable by thermals. −Little or no protection from the elements
Surveillance Site During construction the TL must ensure Noise and light discipline maintained Security is established and monitored FM communication is monitored
Surveillance Site Prior to occupation the following should be reinforced Egress route out of the area Security plan Alert plan Evacuation plan Distance and direction to RV/procedures Rest plan
Surveillance Site Chow plan Commo plan FM windows/FM no-commo plan Maintenance plan Weapons Equipment Personal hygiene Stand to procedures
Surveillance Site Periodic commo checks with the hide Voice Data burst (KL-43F) Checks need to be at predetermined times (10 min. before and after the top of hour)
Surveillance Site STAY IN YOUR SITE! Only exit if you absolutely have to. Have a predetermined link up point. (Established during the leader’s recon.) Only move during hours of limited visibility.
Actions after “eyes off” or COM Establish security Remove all equipment Remove the overhead cover Fill in the site (natural materials only) Compact the soil Use top layer for camouflage Take down commo Recover claymores Sterilize and counter-track
